do you name your firearm??

I've heard of a lot of people naming their cars/trucks. But recently it was brought to my attention by a couple coworkers that they named their firearms. Which then I was told I had to name mine. Lol. Anyone else do this? If so, what's his/her name? Figured I'd get another discussion going.

Um actually yes. As a way For wife & I to ask each other a question in what may be infront of others. So instead of " do you have your gun on you?" or " don't forget to put your gun in the safe", we use names . " where's Bertha?"

That's a really good idea!

oh that's a good idea as i never thought to name any inanimate object but that is a good idea ....my son and i being it was just the two of us for the most part did have a code word for danger dang i can't remember why we kept it or how we were going to use it if we had to now it was so long ago but the word was blue for the color carpet he had in his room when we created it .....

In the military we were encouraged to name our weapon, I named my M16 "Samantha", my best friend's name from home. You'll take more care of it, not drop it, and not leave it anywhere. I don't name my gun now because I wouldn't name it after my wife, and she would get jealous and probably mad.

Clever. I suppose I didn't think that naming your gun would serve a good purpose too!

ah i see a good psyop to personalize it so you take better care of it.. i can see how that works no doubt ..reminds me of the class that was given a raw egg they named it and had to carry it with them for a certain length of time i think a week and treat it like a baby not to leave it anywhere or drop or break it
very good
but i would name my gun for the other reason; if i needed to speak of it in public to someone where i didn't want it be known what i was speaking of.......i already have great respect and care about the location and security of where my gun is and don't need to name it for that reason ......but everyone is different and has their own way of doing things .....and it's all good if it works for them

I name mine. Started out for fun but it comes in handy when we are packing up to go to the club and hubby wants to know what I'm bringing so he can pack all the ammo in the car. He won't name his even though I've pointed out lots of our friends (male) that do.
My S&W M&P 15 is "Rico"
M&P 15-22 is "Junior" (looks just like Rico)
M&P 40 cal is "Johnny Ray"
M&P 9mm is "Mariano"
Browning Buckmark I use for Bullseye is "Cowboy"
My newest pink camo Walther P22 is "Josephina".
Stoeger shotgun is Bernie.
And we do call hubbys new 1911, "Bob" He doesn't admit it but acknowledges when I refer to it and won't let me name the others :)

My Smith & Wesson is what I call The Smith.

My CZ97B is what I call The CZ.

My Remington 700 is what I call The Remington.

And my Mossberg 12 gauge is what I call The Mossberg.

They each already came named, and so I see no reason to rename them.

I know GySgt Ermey in his USMC movie said "you will give your rifle a girls name ..."

But that was because all drill instructors say this ... it is a part of their littany from their liturgy in their catechism. They learn to say that in drill instructor school.

It is plainly because as GySgt Ermey says "your days of xxxxxx-xxxxxxx sweet MaryJane xxxxxx-xxxxxx through her purdy pink xxxxxxx are over; you are now married to this weapon of iron and wood and you will be faithful."

Different story.

Wow baby. I now have to wonder what the WM drill instructors tell their WM recruits and candidates about naming their rifles?

You have got me thinking.

Yup.
My LCP is "Elsie" My 9MM was "Barkey" (Sold him ~ "Elsie" won out for CC.)
Wife's SP 101 is "Rosie"
My double barrel shotgun is "Boomer"

We also use the names to communicate while out, like "Is Elsie/Rosie here?"

I only ever named one. A flintlock musket that I named Whitmore, after a notable character from the Battle Road in Massachusetts. He never gave up, and this musket never failed to fire for me. I liked the comparison.
