I have been reloading since the 80's and consider myself a good and conscientious reloader. I would not have a problem carrying my reloads.

I have heard both sides of using reloads for self-defense. Some say you will be in more trouble using ammo you reloaded. Others say there has never been an instance where reloads have been an issue.

With ammo getting hard to find what are your thoughts on this?

I voted "Reloads for target, and store bought for carry" because I'd rather be safe than sorry in the legal aspect. But don't get me wrong, if all I had were HP's that I handloaded myself and knew that they would perform flawlessly. I'd have no problem using them as a last resort.

You should use whatever ammo you have the most trust and confidence in. Getting into "more" trouble is a moot point if the shooting was justified self defense. It's your ass on the line, use the best resources available.

Your poll doesn't have the answer I would choose.

Would I use reloaded ammo? Yes, but not all the time since I don't reload all the time.

I reload a bunch now, and would not hesitate to carry my reloads. In fact, I am now carrying reloads, and have never had a failure with any of my reloads. I only reload in absolute quiet and by my self. No one else is allowed in the room when I am in the process. If you are not confident, the buy all you can get.

I personally wouldn't carry handloads. No so much for the confidence factor as the legal factor. Firefighter is right in the aspect that handloads loads probably wouldn't play any part in you getting cleared criminally but civilly is a different matter. I good anti-2a lawyer can spin anything from a polished trigger to handloads to make it look like you were out to kill somebody. It's BS but I'd rather be safe than sorry. With that said...it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Always carry what you are confident in.

I've pretty much stopped buying ready made ammo, and have gone to reloading, largely because of availability. I really don't think it makes any legal difference, and there'd really be no way to tell they were reloads unless I just felt like telling them (I've kept my brass for a very long time, and so the manufacturer head stamps on my brass are from many manufacturers). I buy pretty much exclusively Hornady SJHP bullets. Once you fire, the primer and powder are gone. I load max power loads for both my .357 Magnum and 9mm rounds, but they're still within the Lyman recipe guide.

There is a legal side to this. Not only re-loads but all Personal Defense ammo.
In two court cases of last year, one in Taxes, the other Washington-The State of.
Both shootings was 'self defense' and both were found guilt.
#1 Texas- a .45 was used with personal defense store ammo. The Jury was interviewed after and stated.
The only resaon to use this type of ammo was the inflict the most damage possible. This is not needed with such a large caliber.
#2 Washington- I don't remember the caliber. Jury stated- the reason for him to use reloaded ammo was the inflict the most damage, He intent was to kill.

You can get scum bags in any jury. That doesn't influence whether or not I carry reloads or store bought. If store bought is available I use it...if not I'll use reloaded ammo.

Is there anyone here who would shoot with the intent "to scare'?

NO! If a situation doesn't require lethal force you should not be introducing a weapon to it. If you drawing your weapon doesn't deter an intruder or attacker in itself your next step should be firing to stop the threat. Warning shots should be left to combat zones where procedures for them are precisely laid out in the ROE. Whatever you do don't listen to dumbass VP Biden. You will most likely be arrested.

I still have dozens of boxes of the infamous, super-deadly, extra-lethal, near-nuclear, Winchester BLACK TALON ammo, that was found to be so offensive that Winchester was forced to stop marketing it in the early 90's, lest a stray shot kill every living creature in North America. Would I, and the criminal element and the public be better served if I just relegate this offensive ammunition to the 'relic& curio' section of my collection? Do you think a jury would judge me as being 'deranged' if I were to ever use this in a self-preservation scenario?

IMHO; A good shoot is a good shoot.

I don't deny that some AG libtard attorney may try to make you look like some death hungry insane killer. (That's what libtard AG lawyers do.)

But, a good PG lawyer would be able to counter any made up argument made by a libtard attorney with the TRUTH and facts. Most reloaders do so not only because it's cheaper. But, because reloading can give you better accuracy & perfomance than a factory load. Some reload lighter than you can buy from factory.

Personally, my favorite load in my 40sw is a smaller, lighter & more accurate bullet than I can buy off the shelf. (The same goes for my 45acp.)

It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to disprove any AG libtard argument that might say reloads are more deadly. Just by presenting "factual" & scientific ballistic comparisons, a good PG attorney would completely shred that argument. This means my primary concern is making sure any SD situation where I must resort to deadly force be only that I was within my rights and had justification to do so.

One piece of advise I was given is to find out and use whatever your local police dept is using.
That seems like good advise from what I am reading here.

The problem with that is if your firearm doesn't like the ammo the police department approves. Also, if someone were to go out their way to get police approved ammo, are they also going to get the police approved firearm for the same reason? What about police approved holsters?

What the police use should have no bearing on what you carry.

Reliability
Effectiveness
Affordability
Availability

Those seem to be the important factors for me.

This is what I was taught. Thanks.

I've noticed (pre panic) reloads that you can buy online or at shows are as expensive or close to as expensive as new ammo is, so 98% of my shooting is with new ammo

that is an urban myth, any good lawyer would take down any prosecutor who tried to bring what ammo was used into play, seek out ayoob's columns on this topic for good perspectives
