Do you load 8 rounds in the magazine, then chamber a round? Are you breaking the law?

Carrying with a round in the chamber should be the only way to carry. If you are concerned about safety, carry a firearm with a safety. It is much quicker to flip a safety than rack a slide. But, I also suggest that you train and train with it to make it one smooth motion.

7 rounds in mag, and keep 1 in chamber..

and i thought california had it rough with a 10 round limit, at least grandfathered law was honored so im able to keep my 17 round mag :|

I see no problem with an external safety,
As long as your not carrying a different functional gun every day. Some with safeties , some without.Then I can see getting confused.

So you are willing to be killed and be legal rather than be able to defend yourself and maybe survive. THAT my friend is what you have told me. Then again I live in SC where we are in the process of expanding our ability to have a firearm--legally. I guess living in the fascist state of NY will serve its citizens well when the garbage in the whitehouse is done with all of us.

OK...let me explain it a different way. Instead of immediately shooting from the hip, taking a purely contrarian viewpoint, think of it this way....
The State of NY is looking for ANY REASON to take your guns away!!! So, my gun holds 8 in the mag and 1 in the pipe, now illegal as of 4/15/13....
BUT...if I have 1 in the pipe and 7 in the mag, I am perfectly LEGAL....they have NO REASON TO REVOKE MY CARRY PERMIT!

So, let me ask you.....if you lived in the Socialist State of NY, would you rather leave 1 round out of the mag AND be able to defend yourself with a gun now and in the future?
OR.....Would you "SHOW THEM"...show your disdain for the POS law and protest by disobeying it...carry 8 in the mag....have them revoke your permit....take your guns....and only be able to "carry a knife to a gun fight"???

It's a matter of weighing the risk. I personally think the "SAFE ACT" is a POS law, but until it's repealed as "Unconstitutional", I will have to abide by the law.
I have weighed the risk....and believe it's better for me to carry 7+1 and while not optimal, continue to carry my weapon of choice to protect myself now and in the immediate future than to carry 8+1...get caught... and be able to carry only 'less lethal' weapons (knife, club, pepper spray) for the rest of my time in this state because my permit was revoked.

I personally believe that the 2A "shall not be infringed", but lets deal with the reality of the day. So, where it IS being infringed and given the choice above... Which would you prefer?
