The reason I voted no is that we should blast all those idiots off the map before we leave then bring all our troops home. Iraq And Afghanistan have been nothing but another Vietnam. We didn't commit ourselves to winning it 100% and just like Nam were leaving w/o finishing the job.
The issue with victory, is that it was never truly defined. There is a broad goal, but no clear destination at which we would declare victory.
We got Bin Laden(I guess) but that was only the initial goal, along with ousting the Taliban. This mission quickly transformed into nation building, for we can't go phuck up somebody's homeland and not try to leave it a better place than we found it. This, is usually a task that won't be accomplished.
We are fighting the war on terror, which is really the war on an ideology... islam. You see, here's the thing about fighting a belief driven enemy... they can't be defeated. Ideas last forever, words travel faster than our bullets, and they have an even more dramatic effect.
We could go in, guns blazing, drop napalm and nukes, maybe even some bio... wipe out hundreds of thousands of people. Want to know what that'll actually accomplish? Spreading the hate for America, stregthening the resolve of the enemy, ailienating our own military(war is poison to men), and doing nothing towards absolute victory.
If we learn anything from history, it should be that a large, organized, well trained military fighting for political reasons(yeah, it is) will never defeat a small, ruthless, devoted, tough, ideologically based enemy fighting on and for his land. I'm a student of history, military history to be exact. History will always repeat itself.
In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh said "You will kill 10 of our men, and we will kill 1 of yours, and in the end it will be you who tire of it." This proved to be true didn't it?
There's an Afghani saying, "they have all the watches, but we have all the time". I take this to heart, for it is absolutely true. It is true b/c they fight with not only small arms, IEDs, RPGs, and terror... but with an idea, one that is stronger than ours I'm afraid.
While we are quick to insult them, we need to respect them. I didn't think much of them either, but my ignorance has fled me regarding that belief. I do not like them, in fact I think I hate them... but I do respect them.
All those that fail to respect their enemy will no doubt be defeated by his own ignorance and arrogance.
Too many mistakes were made, and realized too late to be fixed. Our stategy was poor at times, and our tactics off center of the goal. There is no supreme victory to be had, and to leave with honor can only be done if we do it timely. It breaks my heart to know so many of my fellow brothers and sisters in arms gave the ultimate sacrifice, without victory to be had...
But that doesn't mean we need to let more die for the same reasons.
