Do I tell Law Enforcement Officers?

I was just wondering when and under what situations are you required to inform LEO that you are carrying?

The law on this varies state by state, you will need to state what state you live in for more specific help. I live in a state where I am not legally obliged to inform, so I choose to only inform if it's for something other than a normal traffic violation. You should also read through your specific state code in addition to any help here, because most of us are not lawyers.

1. it depends on where you are when you have the interaction with law enforcement
2. USE THE SEARCH FEATURE!!! this has been discussed to death and the outcome always remains the same.

In Kansas, you're not required to tell them. I try not to even let the issue come up. If I don't put myself in a position to be asked, not a problem. That position would most likely be if I got stopped for speeding. Since my husband and I almost always go places together, I make him drive. We both have CC licenses but I always carry and he never does. I assume they already know we have CC licenses since they're issued through the DMV.

If you're in a state that requires you to tell them, that's exactly what you do.
And if you are in the habit of getting stopped, you should probably do something about your driving.

As soon as they run your license, they'll know you have a CCW. I've always been told to hand over the CCW along the license and registration. If you don't, they may ask you about it anyway.

Not necessarily. Here in Colorado, the county is the one who issues the CHP, not the state. And counties keep CHP info separate from Driver's License info (not issued by the same people after all!). They might make the info available to other counties or state troopers, but they don't have to. Even if they do, it still won't show up when they run your license because the info is in a different location.

Know the laws of any state you are in concerning this. If the socialist regime has stripped you of your 4th Amendment rights and you must submit knowledge of your property to LE then you must. If your state understands the Constitution on this issue and does not require you to inform then don't.

A traffic stop is not a fishing expedition for LE, even though some of them think it is. Bringing up your firearms and worse, handing them over, is NOT safer for anyone. The safest place for that firearm is to stay put in that holster.

So going back to your question, know what the state requires you to submit to and do that only. Anything else, with the wrong LEO, can turn ugly quickly.

A good word of advice, understand the key word to your right to remain silent, is the word "silent".

PURELY a state and local matter.

In Ohio, you are required to inform an LEO that you have an Ohio CHL or recognized equivalent if:
  1. you are stopped for a law enforcement purpose.
  2. you are ARMED.
I advocate obeying the LAW.

If you are REQUIRED BY LAW to notify, do so.

If you are not, DON'T.

Google the name "Daniel Harless" for the reason why.

Being blunt and honest--you should not be CC if you do not know the answer to your question. Who taught you or what kind of course did you take? Why would you rely on a forum for an "expert" answer? You are CC, you have responsibilities and knowing the laws covering your decisions is numero uno on the list.

Unless it is required in your state...should you inform LEO?....Absolutely not! You never can tell how the LEO will react, so why open that can of worms. You may get one that's a 2A supporter, it may be a pleasant encounter....BUT...if you get one that thinks only LEO should have weapons, that may end up completely different. If, for some reason, you are asked to step out of the vehicle or you are asked about weapons in the vehicle, then respond appropriately. Be honest, tell them that you have a valid CCW permit, where the weapon is and ask how they wish to proceed. Otherwise, have your license and other documents ready and accessible...and in sight when the LEO approaches. It's all about Probable Cause! If you volunteer that info, you may be asked to see the weapon...which you can answer in two ways... Either you can surrender your weapon to the office...or you can say "No", which could be construed as failure to comply with a reasonable request of a police officer. Hmmm, either way, he'll have your weapon. The first, you've relinquished your rights without any probable cause, the second, you'll probably end up in cuffs. SO, the moral of this story can be summed up using a few old phrases...Let a sleeping dog lie! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! No probable cause, No search!

maybe your permit would be linked to DMV records in whatever state you are in but that is not at all true for all states.
you need to be aware that this is a forum with people from many different places so you need to be very specific when making statements and dishing out poor advice like you've done

Depends on the state, and even in some states, depends on the particular dispatch center being used. Statements that are true for you (if it is) are rarely true for 100% of persons in America. I have a Wyoming driver's license and a Washington State CPL which I used a Washington State ID Card to obtain. (Military exceptions). So your statement is 100% false in my case, 100% of the time.

The OP's question was "under what situations are you required to inform LEO that you are carrying?" and the only proper answer that is not a personal opinion is, it depends upon what the law says in the jurisdiction you happen to be standing in at the time. Simple as that. But we will have pages and pages more...

Let's see......
Ahhh... Wrong and uh, wrong again.

How does that logic work for my state of Vermont?
Vermont does NOT have a permission slip to carry, (ie. no permit for OC or even CC!).
How then would the lawman even begin to know who has or doesn't have a pistol on them?!
Read and understand your own laws before assuming they are all similar across the country.

Again, that depends on the state. Not all states link permits to DLs. Some states have laws against such a database.
