DIY retention loop for holsters

This is a little addition I added to my Alien holster, which I really enjoy using. and OWB holster that I wanted a little extra safety factor in keeping the weapon from falling out or being removed by someone with slick hands.

The small bungee cord with a knob is like the ones used on the ShelterLogic Garages to hold the roof tarp in place.

By removing the screw on the holster nearest the handle of the weapon and placing the loop of the bungee over the spacer on the holster and replacing the screw, You have created a retainer for the weapon. You can adjust the the tension of the bungee by retying the knot in the knob tighter. Or if needed you can untie the cord and thread it through a hole or a loop or even around your belt.

This is simple and easy to do and IT WORKS.

That is not a good idea IMHO. Too much to hang you up when you need the gun the most. There are proper retention holsters for your concerns which won't endanger you.

If the holster needed a retention strap, it would have been made with one or come as an option. That's just more thing to remember to perform to get the gun out if the holster.

this is a terrible idea for those who carry a weapon for self defense. anything that slows your reaction to a threat is bad. if you are concerned about weapon security find a properly designed retention holster

Does that include clothing?

It might not be the worst thing I've ever seen, but I really don't understand it. It seems completely unnecessary. With Alien Gear's adjustable retention, why not just tighten it up a bit? I've got mine set so it's easy enough to draw, but if I were to walk around on my hands the gun would still stay put.

And if you want active retention, why not just buy a holster designed that way in the first place?

This idea is not the sole retention for a weapon, but added retention. Situation awareness if one of the main factors
of whether or not you you use this added safety for your weapon and your mind. If you worked in a bad neighborhood
everyday I would definitely not use this system. But if your out in the woods hunting or hiking or working on the farm
the extra retention does not hurt.

Yes there are holsters out there that have the retainer straps, snaps, buttons and Velcro to hold a weapon in place,
even fixes blade knife sheaths have some kind of retention. I have seen combat holsters that have the extra bungee
cord built in to hold the weapon in place. This idea is a way to add retention with out spending lots of money if
you want or need it.

DIY for about $1.00...your choice your money.
judging by the quality and amount of responses to your post, I would say you are the only one siding with you. You defend yourself by saying its only a dollar. Basically you added something to an expensive holster for retention purposes that could have been achieved in a better and safer fashion by purchasing a cheaper type of holster, since you are talking about money.
What we as a whole are saying is that your $1 item could cost you your life and we don't want to see that, but hey, your life your choice. SMFH.

I'd say your life and your money. Safety is not something to cheap out on, especially since you could have gotten a nice holster with the extra retention you want for less than $10 more than what you spent on the Alien Gear.

When seconds count - the police, and your bungee cord retained firearm are only minutes away...

It's amazing how many people think that the mere act of carrying a firearm makes them safer and fail to consider how long and how many different actions it might take to draw the gun from the holster and make it ready to fire.

it just shows a severe lack of proper self defense training. one of the things that I've learned from my training is that I need more training

I think I learn that every single time I take a class... Now, how long before my next one?
