He is still in favor of some gun control efforts (for instance, he supports and utilizes NYC-style random stop and frisks), but any comment supporting firearms carry coming from a public figure in the greater Detroit area is a step in the right direction!

“Coming from California (Craig was on the Los Angeles police force for 28 years), where it takes an act of Congress to get a concealed weapon permit, I got to Maine, where they give out lots of CCWs (carrying concealed weapon permits), and I had a stack of CCW permits I was denying; that was my orientation.

I changed my orientation real quick. Maine is one of the safest places in America. Clearly, suspects knew that good Americans were armed…

There’s a number of CPL (concealed pistol license) holders running around the city of Detroit. I think it acts as a deterrent. Good Americans with CPLs translates into crime reduction. I learned that real quick in the state of Maine,” Link Removed

Now if we can just get the legislators from this area to see the logic….

Not holding my breath.

BTW, I just faxed this article to Grand Rapids, MI, Mayor George Heartwell, and will fax it to a few legislators in Lansing, MI, as well!

That's the problem with Detroit. That one guy espousing conservative views and the whole city goes to crap. They need more liberals in Detroit to fix the place. After nearly 60 years of liberals mayors they just about got the place turned around.

Yep! The libs have almost have turned Detroit into a ghost town and then they will give it back to the Indians!! But the Indians may not want it now!! :sarcastic:

Chicago will be next!

Chief Craig has taken some heat for his recent remark that armed citizens are a deterrent to crime. Here is a followup article in which he defends his previous remarks:

His statements ring true and statistics support his position, but politics have nothing to do with statistics and these types of tactics take years to turn around a community.

Will a community in the condition Detroit is in will make the job that much harder and take that much longer for real results to be evident. Finances will be a major deterrent to real change without political forces that stand against his position regarding guns in the hands of citizens being a deterrent.

I hope the negatives he will encounter aren't effectual as they seem to be and that he is in fact successful in making life better for Detroit citizens. His example could make a difference for a number of large cities in the future. After all that is what this is all about the future of citizens of these United States.

Politicians are not about to let facts interfere with their posturing. Chief is fighting crime, not so worried about posturing. Besides, seriously, who would care if they got fired from one of those big eastern cities? Lots of jobs just waiting for a man like that out in America.

Biggest laugh I get is when politicians think a No Weapons allowed signs will stop those with weapons and evil intent. What kind of an idiot can't figure that one out? Answer, whoever hangs up those stupid signs.
