Detroit high school basketball coach shoots one student dead as they tried to mug him

A 70-year-old high school basketball coach is being held by police after he shot dead a 16-year-old male student and injured another, when they allegedly tried to mug him outside their Detroit school on Friday night.

Local reports named Michael Scott as the student who was fatally shot while the name of the coach and the other victim at the Martin Luther King Jr School shooting haven't been released.

WXYZ Action News said the shooting took place at around 7.30pm on Friday following a basketball game at the school on East Lafayette Boulevard.

Shot dead: Michael Scott, was shot dead at the scene according to local reports. His mother Priscilla Scott, said she 'wanted answers' today and denied her son was involved in guns

It is alleged the two male pupils pulled a gun on the coach and two girls he was escorting to their cars.

According to reports, the coach has a license to carry a concealed firearm and is a reserve police officer.

He was a reserve police officer. Had a commission card so he is a law enforcement office and can legally carry a concealed weapon. The punks picked the wrong old man to try and kill.
