Denver County Colorado Conceal County Process

There are irregularities here in Colorado I find irritating. (I emailed the Colorado Attorney General and never got reply.) State law declares that a valid Colorado-issued ID is adequate proof of residency, yet many counties including here in Denver do not accept it as more than your identification. They want lease or mortgage primarily. Yesterday I had my CCW appointment (they put you on a LONG waiting list just to drop off your papers! My appointment took TWELVE MINUTES and I had to wait FIVE MONTHS to get it) and I had to give them a photocopy of my 2012 federal tax return as proof of residency!

The Colorado CCW permit application states giving your SSN is supposedly optional, yet there they had it on my tax return AND on the two fingerprint cards I had to fill out. What a joke. The application also said something about submitting a passport-sized photo. I got passport photos, they rejected them offhand saying they needed to take their photos because its in the computer system that prints out the carry permits.

I don't know if they did it to merely save money or as a way of harassing CCW applicants, but we have to go to the Denver Police Headquarters building downtown and see them for the appointment. I had envisioned a little side office where CCW people go, but no. Get this: We were taken into the booking room - literally - and they took my picture with the mugshot camera and took my fingerprints with the criminal fingerprint plate. Just on the outside of the mugshot area was two prisoners sitting on a bench, both handcuffed to their seats! WOW.

That was kind of weird.

Oh and Colorado state law stipulates that they have 90 days from yesterday (July 24) to approve of my application or reject it. Denver County has been violating that waiting period whereas other counties have been issuing permits early.

This city tried opting out of conceal carry entirely (the way they were able to get away with doing for open carry) and the state law won't let them. Is this how they punish us?

denver sounds alot like seattle, they try to make up their own rules and punish anyone that doesnt agree with their agenda. 90 days? damn thats a long time, wa is 30, i got mine in 15, i know some one who got theirs this year in 8.

Right, the excuse is a lot of applications. They do appointment only so it's like 20 people if that a day apply, only like 3 days a week. Denver is an anti-gun liberal stronghold, and I have no trust for City Hall. Funny how they have metal detectors in all their buildings and cameras everywhere. The building where you pay parking tickets has 12 cameras in the lobby.

I called Feb. 28 for an appointment and was given one for July 24. Come on! Literally counties next door are walk-ins!

Denver County also has a fake assault weapons ban. They had a laundry list of guns to outlaw they plagiarized from California. It was thrown out in court, and they forgot to add the AK to the list. All they had left after the court gutted the ban was a 20 round magazine limit for centerfire rifles. Any rifle with a mag over that is considered an outlawed "assault rifle" here and the MINIMUM penalty is confiscation/destruction of firearm (cop takes it home) and $100 dollars and 10 days.

It was a walk-in, they did fingerprints electronically, took a picture there (didn't ask me to bring one) and used my driver's license for ID and proof of residency. (I've used my car registration for proof of residency elsewhere... that might work in Denver... maybe.) It's amazing what a difference a county line can make.

See!!!! Denver County isn't following the damned law! I looked up the statute! It says that a valid Colorado-issued ID is adequate proof of residency in your county.

So where did you have to go to get your picture and prints? Into a holding area for prisoners where they pointed a mugshot camera at you like a criminal, or somewhere half-decent?

Did they make you give them your Social Security number?

Yes! I had to do that... but this county is so small I wasn't terribly surprised. My picture on it looked very creepy thanks to the strange lighting there. I found it amusing. Everyone there was very helpful and friendly, so it wasn't as weird as it could be. And I did give them my SSN... They didn't require it, but since I'd had background checks done for the military I was hoping it would speed things up. Picking up the permit was very easy... come in any time, 24/7, and they just hand it to you.
