DD214 = Handgun Training

How many states offer a CCW license which you can use your DD214 in lieu of the required training course? I have just received a Virginia Nonresident CHL all through the mail using a copy of my DD214 to fulfill their training requirement. I was able to do this from overseas – using my step-brother’s US address to receive the mail from the Virginia State Police. It felt pretty cool since I am rarely in my home state long enough to spend a complete weekend doing the training there.

I understand that FL does, or used to, issue a non-resident CCW license using the DD214 in the same way. I am wondering how many other states do this? Maybe it might be nice to have that list sticky-ed here so veterans can find this information quickly? Any thoughts?

When I moved to Florida in '96, I used my DD214 to avoid the training class.

Wisconsin uses the DD214 for residents.
Arizona recognizes it, you must submit finger prints (2 sets) and some paperwork.

Oregon let's you as well but ONLY if it states on your DD214 states that you are pistol qualified.
Most enlisted personnel (at least in the USMC) don't pistol qual until they reach Staff, unless required for their MOS (armorers, MPs, etc.) so most still have to take the course. I pistol qualed as a Lance when I became a CMT, but I still ended up taking the course because my girlfriend didn't want to do it alone lol.

I'm shocked by this practice. I'm not upset by it, but shocked.

I'm an Air Force vet and I can tell you when I left the Air Force, I had no clue about firearms. I didn't get into firearms until well after I was out of the service. I received much training, not because it was required, but because it was the smart and safe thing to do.

My only "training" in the military was during basic training. We marched to the Army Post and we fired 30 shots of an M16. We didn't even load the rounds ourselves. We then marched back.

However, the training course requirement is a joke too. Heck, permits are a joke. I guess what I'm really saying is, does anyone know what "...shall not be infringed" means?

I don't expect that everbody who finishes a single tour in any of the services has really been trained with a handgun - so I guess there is that argument.

I happen to have been a USMC Infantry Mortarman so my issue weapon was a 1911A1 which I qualified with a number of times. Admitedly I only became a truly competent pistol marksman years after my first tour but I was competent as far as safety and knowing my limitations.

I used my DD214 as my training requirement for both Virginia when I lived there and here in Florida now that I live here. Of course, I qualified expert with the. 45 and later the 9mm. I was an MP so I carried every day and qualified every 6 months.

It hasn't really changed much in the USAF. Most people will never qualify with the M9, those that do are obviously in the right AFSC to need it or get tasked to go to some god-aweful part of the world to work in ISAF, attached to the Army. Yeah, I was one of those unlucky people... On the bright side, I qual'd expert.

Yep - in FL it serves to document training, but I took the class anyway, because my wife had to.

I Qualified as Expert with the M-14 and the 1911A1, got the medals, but apparently your DD-214 has to state that you did a safe handling course...
Of course, I was the one with the SAMTU certificate (small arms Marksmanship training unit) , who ran and signed off on the Nuke security teams and trained them on the M14, M60, Ithaca riot guns AND the 1911, but that doesn't count, for some reason...

So i took the NRA course, taught by a Mall Ninja, with loads of misinformation.
Got my CCW, thats what counts!
