Day 30 or the "shall issue" time period is tomorrow. No permit to date.

I am just curious. How long did it take you to get your Maine Resident Permit? The law says that "it shall be issued or denied within 30 days" for residents. This is day 29. I have an unblemished record and hold numerous professional licenses in the State of Maine. Over the last couple of years and as recently as Christmas 2011 I have purchased handguns and the required FBI check. A call to my well to do southern Maine town Police Department indicated that they haven't completed the process yet.

(Edit) I just saw a post below saying that they were possibly 90 days out because of the volume of applications. That may be the case, but it is unacceptable unless they amend the Statute. There is no reason that there can't be a 5 day turn around.

I was quite fortunate to get mine back in about a week and a half, although I got mine at the beginning of last summer and not this year. We were told that due to state cuts, there were only 2 people who processed all CFP's and the related background checks (crime, mental health, good moral character, if your socks matched, etc).

Unfortunately, the other wrinkle is that the renewal process is very similar to the new application process. So if there is a large number of renewals, that could be what's clogging the system, too.

Hang in there, Merlin III, the wheels turn slow, but at least they turn.

I don't know what your State laws are but ours require that if for any reason a permit is not issued in 30 days a temporary permit must be issued until the process can be completed.

On day 31 I would call the Ombudsman and file a complaint if you do not have some satisfaction. If you really want to get serious call an attorney but the Ombudsman doesn't charge and that is one State office no bureaucrat wants to hear from.

Edit: Take the time tonight to read your statutes. This is something that you should do again before you get your permit and at least annually thereafter anyway. When you call the Ombudsman have the applicable statute numbers available.

It may be from larger than normal numbers or it may be that they are intentionally dragging their feet like the feds are with the silencer stamps. If this doesn't work call the NRA or a local gun group and ask for help. Rattle a few cages. Complaints to local elected officials might also have some effect. The more calls they get the more likely they are to want to get you off their back. Good luck.

Someone said there was a backlog of applications and that they only had two people working in that department. Now that I think of it, I live in a town that does it all themselves. The State does not issue the permits unless it is for a non-resident or it is in the "Unorganized Lands". I think this one lays at the feet of the town and I can't imagine they are swamped with CCP applications.

Looks to me like permits are issued by MSP...but maybe thru your local authority?

You are correct. They can't just arbitrarily start saying 90 days when the statute reads 30 days for residents of more than 5 years.
