Some interesting background: This quote originally appeared in the May 15, 2001 edition of the Seattle Times. The Dalai Lama's speech from which the quote is taken was delivered a day or two earlier to a large group of high school students in Portland, Oregon.

No criticism is meant toward the original poster, but unfortunately, this quote is often presented out of context, as it is above. The Dalai Lama immediately followed his comment with a warning that no one should ever shoot to kill an attacker, but only to wound them. Imagine the many lives you could have saved if the perp died...and the taxpayers money trying to rehabilitate it and sometimes to no avail. And when confronted with immediate danger to your (and yours) life/lives and you have the means to protect yourself and your family, in that split of a second, do you really think you have time to plan where you wanted to shoot that perp in such a short period of time? The guy that I will shoot will be hit in the direction of where my gun aims. Just saying..
