Some interesting background: This quote originally appeared in the May 15, 2001 edition of the
Seattle Times. The Dalai Lama's speech from which the quote is taken was delivered a day or two earlier to a large group of high school students in Portland, Oregon.
No criticism is meant toward the original poster, but unfortunately, this quote is often presented out of context, as it is above. The Dalai Lama immediately followed his comment with a warning that no one should ever shoot to kill an attacker, but only to wound them. He offered "shooting them in the leg" as the proper response to being fired upon. You can read the full original story
