Dad Posts Sign: “If You Hit My KId, You Will Be Shot”

I just saw this on FOX News, but I couldn't find a link to it on their website, so here it is on an ABC website.

It seems that a residential community has been plaged by speeders who ignore the 25 mile per hour speed limit, despite the pleads of parents to slow down. So one father, out of frustration has taken matters into his own hands and spray painted and posted a sign saying “If You Hit My Kid, You Will Be Shot!”

As a father who has raised 3 kids myself, and now the grandfather of one, and also as a new gun owner and CCW permit holder this story has really caught my attention. I can't fault the father for doing this, but I hope that he would be able to maintain enough self control to not carry through if the worst were to happen. If someone were to hit his child, it wouldn't help the child, or the child's mother if his or her dad were to go to jail for killing the reckless driver. And since he did post his intent, it would be hard to defend in court. How ever, people have slowed down since he put up his sign. Also, at the risk of sounding like my grandfather, "Back in my day," we kept our children out of the street until we had taught them how to safely cross the street. I would have never allowed my kids to ride tricycles or power wheels in the street. They simply weren't allowed into the street at all until they demonstrated enough responsibility to have a respectful fear of traffic.

I hate to say it but when I read about people like that I want to find their street and speed down it.

I totally agree with him. When my kids were little we lived on a corner lot.
I threw things at the speeding cars a couple of times.
Then one day one of the little punks lost control and welded his car to a large oak tree right across the street.
All I could imagine was one of my kids on a bike between the tree and his car.
He was pinned inside and needed the jaws of life to be extracted.
Well, after I heard the crash I ran out of the house and was the first one there.
Even though the statute of limitations is over I will never admit what happened next.
He never sped by my house again.

Is it really any different than a sign that says "Trespassers will be shot on sight" ?

I don't know about California or New York but in Kansas it is different. Trespassers are on your property and are potentially directly threatening you. Speeders aren't on your property unless they're really bad drivers. Which we've had a lot of here lately, cars driving into houses. Even in Kansas you don't shoot a tresspasser who's moving away from you--no threat if they're running away.

If his sign said hit you with my own car instead of "shot" then would there even be a story?

nope because all it is is another example how a reporter can focus on a "gun's " possible use

Damm, my mama kept telling me to "go out and play in the traffic". I think now she was telling me something...............

It's always best to never announce your intentions especially when they involve someone's life, keep your mouth shut---no witnesses!

I think a better solution would be automatic tire spike strips that deploy when a car exceeds a certain mph or possibly hidden cameras that take pics of everyone exceeding the limit then once car and driver are identified have the car impounded for 30 days for the first offense, 60 for the second and permanent for the third.

And where does a private citizen get the authority to implement such measures?

No one is suggesting that it is okay to shoot anyone here. It is about the sign. If he shoots someone that just hit his kid he will have to go to trial. NO DOUBT. However, If I were on the jury..............................

This guy sounds like an idiot to me. Probably shouldnt even own a gun.

The smartest thing he could do is keep his kid out of the street, or move.

Being a parent you sure can fault the father for much and starting at not being a FATHER!

It would be one thing to make a statement like that in PRIVATE but to make it public with your child seeing this is just horrible. Someone like these must think children just do not pay attention and learn from their parents. Child love to be taught and in this example teach the child in a town meeting, community meeting, police meeting. Police are responsive to complaints of speeders but teaching a child the old "eye for an eye", will not help them secure any job nor be successful in life but maybe in jail.

We all can learn from the OP and the Bakersfield, Ca parent.

Save your children, teach, educate and prepare them for the world.

Yeah, no, you don't get to shoot or even threaten to shoot people for a perceived danger. All this guy is doing is setting himself up for a lawsuit.

And where does a private citizen get the authority to implement such measures?

I never mentioned anything about private citizens implementing such measures just that they are ideas that could be implemented however sometimes one must take the law, whatever it is, into their own hands because authorities fail to or are unwilling to uphold them.

That's an asinine statement. So, you're an antagonist Treo? Why would you possibly want to put a life in danger just to test someone?

I have signs posted around my property line stating that any pitbull found on the property will be shot. The offending neighbor complained to the police and got the recommendation to buy a stronger chain so the dog doesnt get shot. Not seeing what this guy did wrong. Speeders in residential neighborhoods are serious threats to safety. If a car were to lose control amd crash through a bedroom wall....
