CWP gun in vehicle on public school property?

I just got an email from Clemson (where I am a student) that a student was arrested for having a gun in the glove compartment on school property. I'm not sure if he had a CWP or not, but it was my understanding that back in 2010 or 2011 they passed a bill that allowed CWP holders to keep a gun in a locked vehicle on public school grounds. Is this not accurate? I know Clemson has prohibits firearms from being on campus, but if this law is there like I think it is, that would supersede that rule. Where can I find this out? I'm gonna call SLED in the morning to get the official answer but I figured I'd picked your brains until then. Thanks.

If you are a student you are required to abide by the school laws however if you aren't a student the universities policies don't apply to you Atleast that's how it is in va

You are correct in your assertion. If you are a CWP holder, then you can store you handgun in your car BEFORE you get on school property. There is a wonderful instructor n your nec of the woods named Bruce Widener. BTW, Go Tigers!!!

I'm attaching the law and the link to the SC State House laws.

SECTION 16-23-420. Possession of firearm on school property; concealed weapons.

(A) It is unlawful for a person to possess a firearm of any kind on any premises or property owned, operated, or controlled by a private or public school, college, university, technical college, other post-secondary institution, or in any publicly owned building, without the express permission of the authorities in charge of the premises or property. The provisions of this subsection related to any premises or property owned, operated, or controlled by a private or public school, college, university, technical college, or other post-secondary institution, do not apply to a person who is authorized to carry a concealed weapon pursuant to Article 4, Chapter 31, Title 23 when the weapon remains inside an attended or locked motor vehicle and is secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle.

in SC, local regulations cannot supercede state regulations as it pertains to firearms. A student with a CWP is within his or her right to keep a handgun in his car, even on school grounds as long as it is properly stored and secured. The law does not omit students.

He would need to have a concealed weapon permit to keep it in his car on campus. If he wasn't 21 then he couldn't have a permit. It is generally ok to have one in your vehicle, but to have it on a public or private campus you would need a permit. See Handgunlaw.us for details.

From the SC code of Laws:

SECTION 16-23-420. Carrying or displaying firearms in public buildings or areas adjacent thereto.

Sweet! Thanks guys! Just wanted to make sure I haven't been breaking the law these last couple of years. I am 23 and do have a CWP.

So one last quick question...I was looking through all the laws on SLED's website and I was trying to find something on the laws regarding transportation of rifles. Do they have to be in a case or anything? Also, I'm curious about this combined with the school grounds issue. The reason being is because I drive 25-30 minutes to Clemson every day, and the range I go shoot at is about 20 minutes on the other side of Clemson. So if I wanna go shoot after school, my options are to either have the rifle in the back seat of my truck, or drive 30 minutes back home, and then about an hour back to the range.

Here she is after she just got her new stock and new duracoat and webbing done.

And yet you didn't seem to care on the SC restaurant thread...

You do what you gotta do, and I'll do what I gotta do...whether its breaking the law or not. My opinion is, if they don't want me breaking the law, get rid of it!
My odds of needing it are much lower on campus, while my odds of getting sympathy from a jury would be much lower. Not to mention a rifle in the backseat is a little more obvious than a concealed compact 9mm. That's why I care when it comes to schools. Especially with all the crap that's been happening lately. Anyways, you got an answer to the question or more "my state allows this, my state allows that" bs?

Oh I get why you came here to heckle...they closed the restaurant one. Guess you couldn't stand not having the last word, or you know I'm right but are still trying to convince people otherwise, or both.

you make a complete contradiction to yourself. this thread is " I want to make sure I am breaking no laws". the other thread was "**** the law, I'll do what I want, and they need to change it to suit me!" (paraphrasing of course). picking and choosing things is what has us in the gun grab/anti-2nd ordeal we are currently in. either abide by them and be an upstanding citizen that can carry responsibly or dont, get caught, then go to pound you in the ass prison and not be allowed to carry again...your choice. it's as simple as follow the rules or dont. if you dont like the ones in place, voice yourself to the people that CAN change them.
