With all the fuss over no-knock warrants and innocent folks getting shot.......TAMPA --
Police said they are investigating an attempted robbery at a jewelry store this morning in which the thieves were dressed as police officers.

errr, CROOKS dressed as cops...

I dunno about you but this trend is disturbing to me... first houses getting broken into and people murdered and now they are robbing retail locations dressed as cops? Wow.

How in the world are we gonna know if they are really cops?

You won't so if it comes down to them or me, they would lose. Even though Florida law says you lose your SYG/CD rights if it is a LEO if you know it is a LEO or should have known it was a LEO. Problem is, their have been cases of fake cops B&E in Miami-Dade too.

How do we stop it, you ask?
"He immediately realized they were not officers and gunfire was exchanged, Davis said."

Become better shots

Shot were exchanged but there was not any body count.

Criminals dressing as cops is scary enough. Cops taking the video and it gets damaged? I have never been a strong believer in coincidence. Either the cops who took the video are in on it or they are incompetent. Neither option pleases me.

Here in Kansas, there have been a couple of instances of a white Crown Victoria with lightbars on top stopping a couple of cars this month. The "trooper" had a uniform , duty belt, gun, handcuffs, etc. so those being stopped would not immediately suspect anything. In one, a lady was sexually assaulted. The second time, the "trooper" handcuffed the man and searched his car then took off the cuffs and let him go. No explanation to the citizen on what he was looking for or if he took something from the car. The Highway Patrol has alerted motorists and has advised that the front plate on the car should match the trooper's badge number. They gave the State Trooper dispatch quick dial cell number to call also if stopped and if unsure to verify it was a legitimate stop. The two stops were 200 miles apart several weeks separating the stops.

I believe in the assault case the words "STATE TROOPER" were hand painted on the driver's side. Since the assault was after dark, the lady would not have been able to see it when first stopped. However, the state spokesman couldn't see why the fake car has not been spotted in daylight.

''the front plate on the car should match the trooper's badge number'' wow i didn't know that and it's good to know too ......
thanks

Not the case here in Florida EE. Many of their cars are sans any front plates at all. If in doubt, go to a well lit area and where other people are present. Call 911 and let them know too so that they can inform a legit officer that you are complying.
