Crimes against Seniors

We've had this fellow calling us for 2 days now. He's got an accent but I cannot tell where he's from. Yesterday, in his initial call, he asked to speak to dh and he fished for lots of info. He woke us up so dh gave him lots of info, too sleepy to know not to talk to this fellow.

This guy said that dh was coming into a huge amount of money and an armored truck would deliver it and he had to pay $750 to the carrier. Yeah right! Now I know what scam he's got going. We've gotten this in emails but never on the phone. He's adamant about calling, even when told to lay off.

His next calls all day yesterday and now this morning, he's adamant to speak to hubby, saying he's a really good friend, he used to drive truck with him, he needs to ask hubby where he bought a truck part, he's fishing for more and not getting anything, and I've answered the phone and I won't pass it to hubby and I won't answer anything!

Hubby is over 65 so it's abuse or taking advantage of a senior, or what ever the law states. Maybe NRS 427A might apply, idk. We've called the Sheriff's Department twice now and they will send out a deputy at our convenience later this afternoon. I'd love to help catch this guy. White collar crime at it's latest! I'll keep you updated.

I would bet that this is not taken seriously by the authorities. Even though identity theft/scams can cause more damage than old fashioned strong arm theft.

I would feed the guy all kinds of bad info so that he tries to run credit card numbers that don't exist with bad social security numbers, etc. Maybe they could catch him at that point.

Had a couple of calls fishing for information. When they ask for my address, I'll give them the address to the main police station. When they ask for my date of birth, I give them the birthdate "07/04/1976".

My voip service allows me to block or redirect specific numbers. If I'm able to get their caller ID, I'll redirect it to a number that constantly rings busy. I'm also able to block all calls that block their caller ID.

It's a lot of fun messing with folks involved in illegal activities. :biggrin:

Well, we just filed our police reports. Don't expect much to come of it but at least we didn't just sit idly by. We'll also file with the State Atty. General's web site and write letters to the local papers. These guys were good, they already had our address and phone number. If you are on the web somewhere, like here on this site, MySpace, Classmates.com, Facebook, etc., they'll find you! The sergeant told us that a lady filed a report this week and told him that she was going to send this caller the money because she could sure use the millions. Sux that the elderly get sucked into this!

There are tactics to use with the social networking sites to avoid becoming a target. Don't post too much info online. Even if your profile is set to "private", there are ways to get around that. If you get a "friend" request out of the blue from someone you don't recognize, don't add them until you're able to verify their identity. Some of these predators will be able to access your address book once you add them. In other cases, things were much worse where viruses, worms or trojan horses were placed on victim's computers. This caused a lot of damage and made life miserable for a lot of people.

The internet is a wonderful thing, but unfortunately like a lot of good things, it's abused by unsavory characters.

Again with the wake up call!

This is the third day he's called. Again with the 7 am wake up calls! He changed his name from Garfield Pablo to Frank Martin. I was awake enough to get that much out of him. :laugh: He kept demanding to know if I'm the police. I was too groggy to deal with it and I just hung up. If he calls back today during the day as he's done before, and when we're awake and thinking straight, then we're going to give him the number to call dh at the local gestapo and the report number he can reference if and when he calls them.:sarcastic:

This last time, Wednesday, I was ready for him. I gave him the Sheriff's number, without telling him who he would be calling, but saying that's where he can reach dh because now dh had a change of mind and really wanted the money. I gave him the case number as an extension. He bought it, he was writing it down and repeating it to me! He hasn't called since! :biggrin:

Again this Adam Henry called at 5:30 am! Stupid, rude, harassing, mean, vulgar, tenacious jackass of a horse's patootie! I said hello then put the phone down w/out hanging up and tried to go back to sleep but couldn't! Sux! Our phone number is history!
