In a situation that emphasizes the importance of situational awareness, a young man in Grand Rapids, MI, was killed early this morning while returning from a concert. He and a friend had stopped at a restaurant when he was approached by an armed robber who demanded his money. His friend, who has a CPL, pulled out his firearm at that point, shooting and killing the robber. They were unaware, however, that the robber was not alone, and the partner of the robber shot and killed the original robbery victim, apparently in retaliation for the death of his own friend, and fled. He is still at-large. Police have emphasized that the motive for the incident was purely robbery, and that there is nothing to indicate that it was gang-related

The incident also highlights the need to get to a place of safety as quickly as possible. In Michigan, leaving the scene of a crime is not a criminal offense for the victim if 1) remaining at the scene poses a danger and 2) the victim contacts police as soon as possible to report the incident.

The shooting by the CPL holder has been classified as a defensive shooting.

Well dang. That only worked out about half good. Other than being more aware of what's going on around you, I don't know what else he could have done. Even then it's possible the other guy did nothing to give himself away until it was too late. If he wanted to retaliate though, why not shoot the guy that shot his friend?

and whoo is to say that both men would not have been killed after being robbed, had the friend not killed one and spooked the other robber into fleeing the scene? It wasn't an ideal outcome, but I don't think it is in any way an argument for not being armed, although I'm sure that's how morons like CSGV and MDA will try to portray it. "See? Even with a gun you're likely to get killed! derp derp"
