Couple Questions

If you are carrying concealed, and enter a place (store, etc.), as long as they don't have a sign that says firearms are prohibted, are you good to go? What if they do have a sign somewhere and you don't see it? Are you breaking some law or could they just ask you to leave?

Also, lets say you were carrying, but need to go to some place where it is illegal to carry, so you take off your holster, put it in your trunk, and strap back up when you return. Is it okay to do that in public as long as you are not actually handling the firearm (it's still in the holster).

I'm not 21 yet, but plan to carry concealed when I turn 21 in a few months and just want to make sure I know the rules. Although, I'm at college half the year and of course won't be able to have a gun there.

You need to research the laws for your particular state. The answer to your questions will vary from state to state.

Start by clicking "Resurces" above, then select yur state.

A couple months age I went to the Fox Theater in Atlanta. I parked I a parking garage about two blocks away and left my weapon in the car not knowing what to expect entering the theater. I saw a sign no weapons allowed but I had to look real hard to find it. There was no weapon check. Next time I will CC and not worry about it.

Ok so it says you can't have a firearm on "Private property when prohibited by the owner of the property, or where posted as prohibited." Does that mean you're breaking the law if the owner does not have it properly posted that firearms are forbidden, and you walk in?

You will go over all the laws when you take your concealed carry class. In many states there are specific requirements for valid signs. If they are not posted properly, you probably cannot get into trouble for carrying. But if they see that you are, they'll ask you to leave. No problem, since it's their property.

in ga signs carry no weight you can ignore them no laws broken

Private property signs do not make it a violation in Georgia. Carry onto a place where it is prohibited by law with a sign though and you'll be breaking a law. Private property you just have to leave promptly if they ask you to or you'll be guilty of criminal trespass.

Still can't answer any of your questions with validity until you tell us what state you are asking about!

haha sorry about that. It's Virginia. I just can't find anything that specific online. Also, does anyone know about strapping up in public?

This is what the VA statute says:
O. The granting of a concealed handgun permit shall not thereby authorize the possession of any handgun or other weapon on property or in places where such possession is otherwise prohibited by law or is prohibited by the owner of private property.

All that means is that a concealed handgun permit shall not override the rights of property owners to prohibit guns on their property. If private property, such as Wal Mart, is posted with no guns signs (and I know Wal Mart does not post), and you carry past that sign, you have broken NO firearms laws. If however, the management/owner of that porperty asks you to leave and you do not, you are trespassing.

Strapping up in public is no real issue in VA because open carry is legal in VA, even without a permit. I would not take the gun out of the holster and be fiddling with it in public, though.

Ccw

in new york it actually goes by the county. the judge puts certain restrictions or things he wants to be followed. we was told if our gun is seen in public and is reported you lose your ccw. why its called a "concealed" carry permit. he does not want it seen period

"There was no weapon check"? Is there a weapon check as you enter theater anywhere in US?

I agree 100% with "Navy Lt" on Va. CCH carry laws and his explanation of same. If I were "Waffolibill" I'd start a campaign to vote that damned judge out of Office because he is infringing upon your 2A rights by placing unreasonable constraints on CCH.

old judge was a pita. he had us restricted to hunting and target right off. had to have a very good reason to want a CCW. the judge now has opened it up alot. all you need to do is go take a 8 hour course, then send in a letter to the judge stating reason for wanting restrictions lifted (hiking , camping, fishing out of state, etc) with certificate from the carry conceal class and he lifts the restrictions to full carry.

I am not advocating breaking the law, but if you carry concealed correctly, concealed means concealed. I've carried into my kids' high school when I was just going to do a quick business and I also carried in a state that I didn't have a valid permit, but it had been valid in that state until just a couple months before I was there. Considering where I was with my family, I felt it necessary to carry even without a valid permit. I never had any problems and knowing I would have been able to defend my family if any problems had arisen made it worth the risk. I may get some heat for this on here but my family's safety took priority over the possibility of going to jail for carrying without a permit. As the old saying goes, I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Gadzooks, Goat, if my kid's school required me to break the law and risk my permit due to safety concerns, my kid wouldn't be there. Who would protect him while you were at work?

To any readers out there, DON'T CARRY ON SCHOOL PROPERTY. It's one of those places that can get you shot if any reports MWAG. and carrying in another a state may have been less risky in the past, but with the HUGE surge in concealed carry, many officers are going to question whether your permit is valid or not.
