Could use some education

HeLLo everyone. I've just recently heard about Open Carry in Michigan. (I know, but it was nice and cool under my rock) But I'm still not too sure about everything. I recently had the desire to obtain and carry a pistol with me after I was beaten unconscious and mugged by a group of unidentified people. I was lucky to be alive, needless to say, I feel like I should be able to protect myself, the area here is just getting worse, a 63 year old veteran was also beaten badly, as well as others. But enough about my reasons...

My main questions right now pertain to acquiring, and then Open Carrying my firearm. Registering the gun is a must correct? I know I should take the gun safety courses, for obvious reasons. But is there anything I really need to get started?
Can a person just get a gun with no needed paperwork other than maybe the gun registry and freely open carry right away?

I might be annoying some of you haha, but I want to do this, and I want it to be done in accordance to the law.

Never been to Michigan.

Don't ever plan to go there either.

I'm from Michigan. You have to get a buyer's permit from your local cop shop to buy a gun. After you make your purchase, you have to take the gun info. back to the cop shop to get it registered. I suggest you get a Concealed Pistol License as well. You'll avoid being hassled from open carry and you won't need to get a buy permit the next time you want to purchase a gun. Classes are fairly short and don't cost too much.

Welcome to the world of exercising your right to bear arms!

Please allow me to caution you to make sure you know, and fully understand, Federal and Michigan firearms laws (and the lesser known nuances of those laws) before venturing out openly carrying.

One "nuance" of Michigan law is sneaky because... the only legal way to "possess" a pistol inside a vehicle is while transporting it... and it must be unloaded and in a case in the trunk if the vehicle has one... or inaccessible to the occupants of the vehicle.

Ok.. that sounds easy .. but here is the sneaky part... Suppose you "transport" your unloaded pistol inside a case inside your trunk from your home to a municipal park for a picnic. So far you are legal. When you get to the park you want to take your pistol out of the case, load it, and holster it so you can legally openly carry it... but.. because you don't want to alarm anyone if they see you handling (handling is also possessing!) your gun you keep the gun inside the trunk as you uncase and load. Oppps! You have just broken the law because you are "possessing" (handling) the pistol inside the confines of the vehicle.

To make that one simple... without a carry permit ... unless in the process of "transporting" a properly unloaded and cased pistol.... it is illegal to be handling (possessing) your pistol "inside" (be careful the gun does not break that invisible line between "inside" and "outside") the vehicle.

Another sneaky one is that without a carry permit it is illegal to possess a pistol on the "premises" (and premises means the entire property... building, lawn, parking lot too) of an establishment that has a liquor license. And the business doesn't even have to sell booze or have any on the shelf... they just have to have the license itself. And it is up to YOU to know who has that license and who doesn't.

Please don't let any of that discourage you.... because...

Too bad you feel that way, I was thinking of moving to CO. By the looks of things on the google satellite pics the people look pretty spread out to me.
