Could food prices surge in 2013?

I think that with the drought, and the Fed's continuing devaluing of the dollar, food price are bound to rise. And turning corn into ethanol, instead of using it as food or feed, will help raise meat prices even more. Maybe it will be a good hunting season, and I'll fill my tags. That will help cut the food bill.

Less than 5% of all gun owners hunt. I can't speak for Upstate NY but in Colorado the deer popululation is severely inflated to the point that they wander through the city in herds. You shouldn't have too much problem filling your tags

All that said, as I've stated before food prices certainly aren't going down and there's no time like the present to start stocking up on non perishables

ETA I got the math wrong it's not five percent it's one fifth of gun owners (20%) that hunt. /ETA

One problem lies in gas prices. Fuel is a core economic component. That means it affects the price of nearly every consumer product. Food prices are directly linked. Growing, processing, packaging and transportation all require gas. When fuel costs increase so do milk, corn, etc.

Yes, deer are driving us crazy in NYS. Lot's of hunting but the little bastards are all over the place. They did a number on my shrubery this year. Every night a small herd of about eight or nine arrive and hang-out near my barn. As the rut begins there's a lot of movement and there are dead deer every few miles along the roads. Also the bears ate my blackberries and blueberries before they even ripened. Trashed the bushes too.

Shoot 'em... y'know, stake out style...

You can be assured that war will break out in the Middle East just weeks before or after 2013, although limited it will last for a few months. For the first time since WWII, to the shock of the world, nuclear weapons will be used. You'll not only be paying around 8-10 dollars for a gallon of gas, but there will also be rationing just like back in the 70's. Just another one of the Signs of the End of the Age that we've been warned about for the last 2,000 years that everyone chooses to ignore. Israel is God's Prophetic Timepiece, all the ignorance and foolish rhetoric won't stop the clock. And just like The Book says, no one will be prepared for the nightmare once it begins, no one.

Keep an eye on them. You will have something to eat when food supplies get short. Consider them an investment and buy more shrubbery.

Wow, really? How do you know all this? Amazing!

Y'know... I never really thought I'd be the guy looking through the sale papers and using coupons... I've been lucky. But, as of late... my wife and I are doing exactly that! We are always looking for the cheapest items, only getting what's on sale, etc... and we still spend more for food now than we did a few years ago. What sucks is I don't really see an end to the prices rising, and we are the lucky ones that aren't living paycheck to paycheck... yet.

I've said this before on this forum if not in this thread, even if the zombie apocalypse never happens food prices are bound to continue to rise as the value of the dollar fails to keep up with inflation.

Food is only going to get more expensive and for that reason alone it makes sense to stock up on nonperishables at today's prices instead of next year's prices.

We've been storing dry goods & other various items for over a year now... I, in no way think it was a bad choice...

This is more to add to your post rather than respond to it but

People would be amazed how quick just adding a 1 pound bag or beans or rice to their shopping list every week adds up.
