Convince a Gun owner to Carry

A Friend of mine owns more guns than anyone I know. Literally hundreds of guns.
He doesn't have a carry permit and doesn't carry. Maybe this shouldn't bother me but it does.
I'm one of those who believes that every able American Citizen should carry.

It's 8:51am, we are going to the range at 9:30am, Does anyone have a convincing argument/statement that would convince him to carry?
I'm running out of ideas.

Back from the range.

I asked him why. He said he doesn't want the government to know any more about him than they already know.
I pointed out that basically here in Florida beyond the background check picture and finger prints there is nothing more. The background check is about the same as when you buy a gun. And, as stated he owns hundreds of guns.

Are you sure he doesn't carry anyways?

My parents still pack, even in their mid 80's and live in Fla. Not sure if they have permits, don't really care. What I would suggest to your friend is that at least having a license gives you more protection under the law that not. I'm sure some on this sites backsides just clenched up butt there it is. NOT stating I want CC regulated by the States but until laws are changed it is what it is.
Tell your friend that when the SHTF in front of him, being armed. It affords him the right/chance/decision to engage to protect and terminate the threat. Or NOT carry and be a statistic in a body bag. The choice should be his. Of course we NEVER hear about shootings in Fla.

He say's he doesn't carry. He is 62 and I have never known him to not be honest with me.
I don't think he is the type to carry without a permit.

I guess...There is still too much unknown about your friend. He doesn't want the government to know more, so he doesn't want to get a permit. Why does he not carry anyways? If he thinks the trade off of the very small chance someone will attack him is worth taking over the other very small chance the government will come for his guns...I suppose that's his decision...I would need to know more about his decisions before I could come up with a good counter point.

I can't take you on a walk through the guys head but I can tell you what I know.
He's about 6'6" tall 300lbs, lives on 5 acres of land with his wife, son, and several dogs.
He is retired and supplements his retirement shopping estate sales and garage sales on Saturday's and selling at a Flea Market on Monday.
He doesn't hunt or fish because he doesn't want to kill anything unless he has to.
He worked construction for a living when he was younger.
He has thousands of rounds of ammo that he has reloaded (I mean stacks and stacks of ammo cans full).
Just all around a nice guy.

Sounds like he could go bear hunting with a switch!

Does he fish? Ask if he has a fishing license. You could also try eidolon's idea, but I would have a friend pretend to mug you while you're together to make sure it doesn't get out of hand.

The idea of a fake mugging seems like it could go so wrong....

There was a story on the radio recently about a zoo that held a fake emergency (gorilla escaped). Only a few knew...The vet not being one...who shot the "gorilla" with a full dose tranquilizer for a 600lb gorilla which was actually a person in a costume. Sent the guy into critical care...

Now...was it completely true? Not sure...I'd just hate to see your friendly mugger get shot by a good guy.

I talked to my friend today and told him we needed to get together and talk about him getting a carry permit. He just looked at me over the top of his glasses and said, "We'll talk about it".

So, Some time we are going to talk about it. I might try to get a hold of him after he "Works" on Saturday and talk.

What I would like now are more things to say that make it a pro rather than a con (I really can't think of a con, but I would guess my friend has some).

No fishing, no hunting, no killing things unless he has to he said.
He told me a story about a Possum getting into his house through the dog door. He caught it, took it outside and released it until it did it again. When he told the neighbor he had to catch it for a second time the neighbor told him he would have to kill it or it would continue to return to his home.
He said it was a hard thing to do to "Dispatch" the animal.

I'm thinking this will take more than one talk. I would say get a good feel on how he feels and let us know.

I'm sure your just nervous but when the time comes you will know what to say.
