Concealed Carry Questions...

Hi,

For the first time in over 28 years of owning and/or using firearms I am finally considering to get my CCP. I live in Virginia where open carry is allowed, but I have very rarely done this either. My past argument against getting a permit is that I have always felt that it was a back door or subversive way to register people with firearms. It's also frustrating as I live in the part of the 25 % Virginia that requires fingerprints as well. And before anyone gets funny, no, I have nothing to hide. I just feel it's wrong that a person with no criminal record, never having said more than "hello" to a LEO should have to be fingerprinted and given permission to have the rights our 2nd Amendment had long since granted us to be usable.

Also, what are your thoughts of simply taking the online instruction courses to expedite this process?

Thanks in advance, I'm interested to see what opinions and advice I will receive.

Since your looking for opinions, here goes......... although it is our Constitutional right granted by the 2nd Amendment it is also a privalege. To me i see registering my firearms as a no biggy. I live in Ohio and we register all firearms. Handguns, shotguns, rifles etc. Yet again to me its like registering a car, there is a certain degree of need to know that comes along with it. Obey the law, keep your nose clean and enjoy your 2nd Amendment is wha i live by.

Wow. Somebody needs to go back on their medications. Exactly which government agency in Ohio did you register your guns with? The 2nd Amendment does not grant any rights, it only protects pre-existing rights. How can something be a right and a privilege at the same time?

Ohio got 7 points, none of which were related to firearms registration:

3 points: gun owners must report lost or stolen guns
2 points: employers are not forced by law to allow guns in parking lots
2 points: colleges are not forced by law to allow guns on campus

I feel dirty, I need to take a shower now. (visiting the brady bunch website)

Online instructions on what? -- for getting a CCW? Somehow you still have to give them your fingerprint. You still have to go to the nearest sherriff's office to obtain that. Take for instance Florida. I live in Missouri. I wanted a FL CCW. I still went to my nearest sherriff's office to get my fingerprint and send it to FL. I did took my classes with a local firearms instructor who is qualified to teach and be able to back me up, if necessary, and confirmed that I had taken over 16 hours of instructions with his company. My husband was the same as you, he too also grew up handing guns but he has to go through the same classes that i did. Maybe your state allows online instructions? Mine doesn't. Go up and read your state laws.

Yes, my state offers online instruction as acceptable. I was merely trying to find out if anyone had done that (online class/test) and felt it was worth taking an online course over/instead of going to an actual class to expedite the whole thing...ie, I can take the test this very minute if I chose online...but have to wait for an actual class.

EDIT: I've done a LOT of research over the past few weeks, and especially tonight. So many pro's and cons I've read searching these and other sites forums. I've decided to bite the, um, bullet, and get the CC permit and do it via the online course as the hours I am working right now just doesn't allow too many other options. Open carry is nice and I like it a lot, but at times it can be a hassle that I just don't feel I want to deal with when I can legally get a CC.

Thanks everyone!

Hi all! This is my first post on here after following the site on twitter for several months. I find this forum very informative and can finally add some pertinent information. Take the online class now but wait until July to file for the permit. Last month the governor signed HB754 into law effective July 1st banning localities from requiring fingerprinting. I feel exactly as you on this subject and also have nothig in my past to hide. I took the class at a local gun shop in February and now I'm waiting until July tho apply for my CHP. I'm also waiting for the Sig P938 to be released. My birthday is in August so timing should work out just about right for my present!

My state requires us to go through the process of not only being able to actually fire our own gun for so many bullets but also 4 different kinds of guns including a revolver. But then your state is different...that is why I said what I said. If I were in your position, which I am not, I will probably ask my company to allow me even just one day break from work so I can go and do my course because it means more for my future if I can legally carry a gun than my work. The life of my family and myself is more important to me than my job. They are my first priority. Not many employers are gun-shy or gun-antis. You might be surprised...just saying..

I took one of the online courses to get my CCP in VA. No big deal, they just want to have proof that you can handle a firearm properly before issuing a permit. The class I took cost me 25 dollars. Watched a video, answered some questions, printed out my certificate. I got my permit about a year ago, and wasn't fingerprinted at that time, don't know if that's a mistake on their part, but considering it took them the full 45 days to grant me the permit, I'm not thinking they cut any corners on their investigation. That being said, it will probably take them the full 45 days for you, just because they can. I've got a squeaky clean record, and they took it with mine. Easy process though, totally painless. With the wealth of information available for free, I wouldn't worry too much about taking an in person class, as long as you feel comfortable handling and shooting your firearm. Just my .02.

jrogo, MANY, MANY thanks for the update on the fingerprinting. I will likely wait until July and continue to open carry (despite potential hassles). I have worked for the DoD which required thorough background checks and I now work privately for a company requiring them. So, it is/was frustrating to find the state I have lived in since birth treating it's people (in selected areas) that way. I was very active with my local delegate with the gun law legislation this year and yet I was completely unaware of HB 754! I sincerely thank you for your time.

I appreciate your input but I am definitely going to take the online test because my state does not require otherwise, and my father, a Marine in Vietnam, and my Grandfather an Army veteran in World War II are the one's who trained me on firearms at a very, very early age. I feel secure in my knowledge of the usage and safety of a firearm. I will, however, take an in person course once my work schedule settles down for self defense lessons as they would certainly be useful. Thanks for your input!

cforgione, I really appreciate your input on the online courses. I have done searches on this forum and others and have found several of them. Some seem a bit, shady, which I will avoid, but I have found some that sponsor another board that I am a member of that I will likely use after reading their feedback. The county I live in, oddly enough, is pretty pro 2nd Amendment which is why I was surprised and disappointed that it would require us to be fingerprinted as potential criminals! There are other counties in this state that are more ANTI-2nd Amendment that do not require the fingerprints! I truly do thank you for your time and input, I was wondering if you would recommend and share the online site you took your course?

Thanks again all.
