Concealed Carry Definition

Hi all I'm new to the forum and recently acquired by Concealed Carry Permit here in NY state, I'm wondering if someone can clarify what "concealed" means. Does it simply mean that you can't see any part of the gun, or that you can't see any form of the gun, or that you can't see anything at all such as a thicker spot under your shirt. I'm working on finding method of carry that works well for me, I typically wear well fitting clothes, with my shirt tucked in and a belt, any suggestions?

What kind of training did you go through? That should have been clarified early on. Concealed is just that; concealed! You ever play hide and seek as a kid? If you were seen, you were usually nailed. Depends on your LEOs out there, but I would say KEEP IT HID!

If you were not required to do so to get your permit, then you need to do so now - read your state law! You need to know a lot more than this-the simplest of concepts-if you are going to carry a concealed firearm.

In Texas printing would not mean BRANDISHING. IF IT from out of you pants our belt yup...not sure what NYS would want. To Coumo, he'd probably only accept concealed if you had it hidden up your WooWoo

Concealed as in not visible. Visible as in you cannot see it--that means the firearm and that includes all parts of the gun. It does not mean that if you look closely enough in a mirror and know you have a firearm that you can then see it. If does not mean wearing a form fitting tight shirt that makes it 100% obvious that a firearm is under the shirt. Use common sense and you will be fine--just do not read more into this very simple idea of CC than is meant to be there--and as others said--read the law in your state.

To Coumo, concealed means unloaded in a locked box in the possession of the police or in another state.....

Thanks Kelcarry for answering the question. Getting your cc permit in Western NY is still "relatively" simple, pay the fee, get 3 character references, get fingerprinted, have a background check and mental health check run and then wait for the court to process everything. I've been reading bits and pieces of the law as I can find them so if any of you have a link to all of it that would be great. I understand that the gun itself cannot be visible, my question is more towards the printing aspect. Say a bulge vs a shape vs clips from the holster. I'm sure some of it depends on the officer you may deal with but I'm sure the law has some description of this and that there is also a "working" definition and that is what I was hoping all of you could help with.

This is a lot of info, but the part that caught my attention is on page one, and I quote: "Your best course of action is to check with the Licensing Officer in your City or County." If I were you, I would contact this individual and discuss your printing concerns.

Thanks for the link, I've read that page, as well as reading the actual penal laws, section 265 and section 400. both simply say carry concealed and this returns me to my original posts intent. I'm not terribly worried at this point and I'm sure I more than adequately conceal when I'm carrying now (my wife carries more often right now until since I can't carry at work), just thought I would get some input on where you all understand concealed to fall. I also know my local police force as I live in a small town and don't expect to ever even need to defend myself against anything other than animals, but better safe than sorry.

In my book if I wear something and I am CC and I can tell without even trying that I have a problem I will change what I am wearing or look for another method of concealment. Look in the mirror. Slight bulge no problem. Considerable bulge that clearly indicates a big boomer is there--no go and rethink clothes. Just don't overthink this CC business and get paranoid over it.

A bump or slight bulge should not be a problem on the waistline as many people carry items on their belt. And, most people do not pay attention and stare at others waistlines (at least we hope not, lol). Ability to see a gun will be based on the gun style itself, body style and what is being used as a cover garment. Without knowing what gun you are carrying and what your body style is (skinny, pudgy, obese) it is difficult to tell you if someone will be able to see and know you are carrying. You will be harder on yourself then anyone else. So, if you can pass the self test you should be good to go.

I tried a few adjustments today and think I've found a few solutions that work for me, as you mentioned RJT, I'll probably be harder on myself than anyone else.

There's no test. There's no definition of "concealed" in NY firearm or licensing law, thus the question is valid.

The G27 is a little tough to hide for a compact. I use IWB for mine. It conceals well at 4:00 but driving is difficult. Try an LC9. Same capacity (7 + 1) and conceals much better. The law requires it be concealed.

Ignore the wise guy comments. There is no definition in NYS penal law under either article 265 or article 400 for "concealed" despite use of the term throughout the law. Generally speaking, in NYS concealed means covered from sight. A shirt, jacket, sweater, etc. is fine. If it prints accidentally there's no issue. Concealed also applies to pocketbook, briefcase or glove compartment as well. There are no special provisions regarding carrying in an automobile.

In Arkansas the law states "concealed from casual view".

So, as long as it covered by anything that isn't skin tight I'm good to go.
