Thanks Rich. I have not seen the recorded daily feed yet on my DVR.
Aparently in Colo when you commit a certain homicide that is particularly heinous it gets charged twice. So 12 deaths x 2 = 24 charges for murder.
The other 100+ charges of attempted murder come from the number of rounds that he fired, most likely, based on the brass casings that the forensics teams recovered.
Makes perfect sense.
The key statement from the judge was that the penalty associated with these charges is at least life in prison and possibly death.
That's now the interesting part. Will the prosecutor seek a death penalty prosecution, and then will the jury convict an obviously mentally ill if not mentally retarded young man?
I don't know if Colo prisons are as nasty as other places seem to be, but in all likelihood the mad joker will probably become a prison target, like Jeffrey Dahlmer did, since Holmes killed a child and women as well as male victims.
All the victims were strangers, and had never done anything to Holmes in any way, which makes this crime seem particularly insane. Similar to the DC sniper.
This whole incident is the most proximately related to mental illness in the 15 to 25 year range of maldeveloping schizophrenics (people who hear voices and cannot resist the voices).
The theatre company was also at fault for their lax security measures.
And no one in the theatre was vigilant enough to notice someone had exited the theatre by a back exit, and by chance had propped open the door.
And least of which, the people were not allowed to be armed in the movie theatre by state law. Ergo gun free zones do not provide any guarantees of safety.
If everyone had been armed, then the melee that would have started would at least have silenced the shooter.
One person alone however would have been unlikely to have any success against this heavily armed and armored shooter though. It would have taken several.
Whenever a handgun goes up against a repeating rifle, the handgun alone does not stand a chance.
