Coalition sends open letter opposing gun ban to Congress :shout:

Oregon Firearms Federation and two dozen other Link Removed groups across the country have joined together today to send a letter to Congress demanding that legislators uphold and protect the Second Amendment.
"Stripping away a God-given, Constitutionally protected right as a reaction to the crimes of madmen is a ridiculous way to make national policy,” OFF Executive Director Kevin Starrett stated in a press release announcing the National Coalition to Stop the Gun Ban. “Concentrating all power in the state was the central theme behind every murderous regime in history. It must not be allowed to happen here.”
The Open Letter to Members of Congress is signed by national organizations including The Firearms Coalition, Gun Owners of America, Rights Watch International, Second Amendment Sisters and USRKBA.org, and they are joined by state organizations from throughout the Republic.
Among the positions put forth by the group:
“Members of the National Coalition to Stop the Gun Ban demand that Congress refuse to use lawful gun owners as political scapegoats and instead reduce school violence by defeating any attempt to pass Link Removed including, but not limited to, banning semi-automatic firearms or magazines, or requiring private gun transfers to be registered through the National Instant Check System; and repealing the Gun Free School Zones Act of 1996,” the letter states.
“Some will urge you to ‘compromise,’ perhaps even the National Rifle Association,” the coalition warns (a coalition source told Gun Rights Examiner NRA representatives declined to sign the letter). “The many thousands of gun rights supporters represented by the Coalition, however, regard ‘compromise,’ as our opposition defines it, to be a process in which we lose slightly fewer of our rights than under the original proposal. Consequently, any legislation which registers or bans firearms; limits magazine capacity; registers private transactions through NICS; or restricts time, place or manner of self-defense is unacceptable.”
Click here to read the entire open letter and to see all the signatories. Interested gun owners can contact those organizations in their state to find out how they can get involved, and are encouraged to contact national and state gun rights groups they belong to that have not yet joined the coalition.
Perhaps this is something we all can get behind! What are your thoughts?

Link Removed is owned and operated by David Codrea. He, along with Mike Vanderboegh of Sipsey Street Irregulars, are largely credited with teaming up to break the Fast & Furious debacle story. These men are not policy wonks, not lobbyists, not intellectuals, and aren't liars. I know less about Codrea than I do about Vanderboegh, but I know both are uncompromising 2nd Amendment warriors. Both have had several appearances on major network news broadcasts. Fox seems to treat them more or less fair, but CNN and NBC/MSNBC treat them like oddities, radicals and dangerous militia-centric maniacs. You can learn a lot about your enemies by determining who their enemies are, and David's and Mike's credibility skyrockets in my mind if they're reviled by CNN and NBC.

ABC and CBS have both uncharacteristically treated them fair as well, on CBS's part, because one of their correspondents, Sharyl Attkinson, has covered Fast & Furious much more in-depth than any other network. I think ABC has given a fair amount of coverage too, and likely used some of David's and Mike's work in their sourcing, so maybe that is why they get a fair shake with them.

As I read David Codrea's piece quoted in the OP, it sure sounds to me like he's behind the coalition. I say that if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me, and so to answer the question in the title of this thread, "Can we support this?" - I would say unequivocally, YES!

Bookmark Gun Rights Examiner and you can probably follow how this coalition progresses. David is very thorough in covering important gun issues, and this certainly has the potential to become one.

Mike Vanderboegh has been very sick with cancer for the last year or so. He was recently hospitalized for an extended period, but is back home now. Not sure how diligent he can be right now in covering this, but his site is still a great resource for finding links to other authors and websites that do provide in-depth coverage of issues important to gun owners. Both David and Mike, as well as this new coalition, should be watched by all of us.

I just faxed the letter to my legislators, and I'm emailing it to others I know so they can do the same.

The ideas of eliminating "gun free zones" in schools (except for criminals) and ensuring our children's safety with armed security in the schools are ideas that I can certainly support.
.
It's about time that our children receive the same degree of protection that all of our idiotic elected officials' kids are afforded. After all, they are just as precious to us as theirs are to them.

Great sig-line. ezkl2230.
