Cleaning Schedule for a Firearm

I am sure it has been asked and answered many times but looking for new fresh look at subject. I own an FN5.7X28 semi auto where ammunition goes for anywhere from $.40-$.60 per cartridge, so when I practice with same, I only shoot about 30 rounds in 5 shot increments with my friends. I tend to think that 100 or 200 rounds can be fired before cleaning is necessary--maybe more and maybe less. How many rounds fired should constitute a responsible schedule for cleaning a semi auto? Opinions? Thanks.

Personally, I clean every 400-600 rounds give or take.. I find that if the firearm functions fine then you are good , but if you start having failures then stop and clean it...

Clean mine after every use, no matter if it's 1 round or 1000 rounds fired.

I almost purchased a five seven several months ago but got another Beretta m9 instead, old habits are hard to break LOL

I also clean after every session. Gives me a chance to check for component wear and such. I have a few older guns some that shoot corrosive ammo, those are especially important to clean immediately. Besides I don't know if it's the fumes or what, but cleaning my firearms is very relaxing.

That's a very clean burning carriage so 100-200 no problem. If your not going to shoot it for a very long time I would clean it afterward or run a .223/.22/5.56 bore snake down it because the 5.7 is a shortened .223 carriage. My buddy has a tendency not to clean his guns ever and he has 400+ rounds through the 5.7 and it still looks good. It's mostly polymer so not much to clean and lube.
Btw fun fact the 5.7 pistol only drops 1" at 100 yards

That is just some of the fun, if you forget how much you paid for it. Lethality, high capacity, extreme exit velocity and lo recoil (accuracy) , comparative light weight---2 of my friends and I purchased and we have a ball with the 57.

I clean almost every gun after I shoot... mostly b/c it relaxes me, but also to check for signs of wear or breakage.

I will let some guns go for hundreds or thousands of rounds without cleaning just for personal testing... I'll still break them down to ensure nothings broken but I won't actually clean it.

I do exactly the same thing, including cleaning a new one before I even fire it.

I do not know if the fumes do it, but I also find taking it apart, cleaning it, and just marveling at what makes a firearm what it is to be a relaxing exercise. As I said in my initial thread, however, I have never found any problem with waiting until I have run thru say 100 or 200 rounds max----then again for the 5.7, the only ammunition available is the 57 manufacturer's standard product, which I use for target practice. Ditto on my 22's--only CCI mini mag, which, IMO is the cleanest 22 ammunition as far as residue is concerned.
It seems that most responses relate to "shoot and clean" as the preferred method. Thanks for replies.

i hate having to clean my gun i don't like the smell of the cleaners or getting it on my hands either ...and haven't in the past 3 or 4 times from the range but i'll probably clean it next time i come back from the range..i don't even like shooting my gun much either but i do just to keep familiar and practice tactics drawing and improving my speed and accuracy .......

I clean my guns after each use at the range. I usually shoot my Five Seven about 100 rounds or so, and the barrel still looks pretty clean. There is a little residue around the metal ring outside the barrel, but that is pretty much it. Still nice to clean it after use even if it is a relatively clean shooter.

I clean almost every time after a trip to the range. That could be 100 to 500 plus rounds. If I know I am going back the next day or two I might not clean it.

My EDC - EVERYTIME it is fired, I clean it when I get home. It is one thing to have a problem at the range, quite another if your life depends on it.
I agree, between cleaning my gun or reloading ammo, I don't know what is more relaxing.

I clean a gun after each time I shoot it, like to know my guns are always ready. Don't mind cleaning them.

Bersa Thunder .32
Bersa Thunder .380
Ruger SR9c 9mm

All carry guns

I too am one that cleans weapons after every use, yes, to inspect for damage or wear and to get the powder residue out of the gun because I don't know when I am going back to the range or when I will fire that particular weapon again. Just a habit I have, well, more so something dear ole dad drilled into me in my younger days knowing the weapon is clean and ready to use whether at the range or for self defense.
