Similar to TX, but not exactly the way we did it some time back - we loaded X rounds, and fired all rounds in a set time. That may be what he's saying.
And at 3, 7, and 15, you should be able to qualify blindfolded, although I saw some silhouettes that looked like swiss cheese. I only had one big hole in my target. So next time I have to do this, I want to draw things like hearts and triangles with the rounds :biggrin:

It is for ONE particular school in TX. It's just something I came across online. I put that the test may vary in your area. I just want to put up something that may help people, like myself, that are preparing for their CHL course.

What test?

In Alabama, you fill out your application (so's they can have the information needed to run the background check and run a couple personal references), pay your $20, wait about a week and come and pick it up.

Hey Samefly, sorry if I irritated you - didn't mean to.

I'll make two comments:
1. TX requires a written test so concentrate on the rules and laws. Also a good instructor will usually make known the questions and answers as the class progresses.
2. Don't worry about the shooting part - I saw a lady, age 65, who never held a gun in her life, rent a semi-auto from the range and qualified.

haha that's a mean ol lady I tell you. You didnt offend me in the slightest and I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge with me. By the way are the any copies of the study material (for TX) online?

As far as how easy the test is, I posted in another thread that I definitely want to take more training beyond the minimum required. Calmly taking your time to shoot paper vs nutty @ss bad guy doing nutty @ss unexpected ***** are worlds a part. Someone had a great signature that went something like "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". I like that. I do know very well (from personal experience) that not all bad situations are reasonably preventable so having some training/prep can make a difference.

We dont have a shooting requirement here in Iowa either but I do think that anyone who carrys should be responsible enough to take it upon oneself to be proficient

I have not seen any written test examples online but the questions come out of CHL-16 that is the whole set of laws, regs, and so on. Here is a link:

I would encourage reading this before attending class. And they should give you a copy in class. (It says 2009-2010 because nothing has changed)

And like I said, don't worry about the shooting part too much as long as you know basic stuff and how to aim the gun through the sights.
The lady I mentioned was taught by the class instructor for about 20 minutes during the lunch hour - he taught her how to load the mag, insert it in the gun, get a sight picture, and fire it. She did as well as the rest of them.
And then there was the guy that showed up with a brand new cheap 1911 and a snoot full of bravado; his gun jammed on the 3rd round. The instructor had to clear it for him and explained to everyone not to show up with a new, untested gun.

I'm up for renewal in 2012 in Texas, so that was a good idea as to how to practice!
I've been a bit lax on the range time the last couple months, so that'll be a good refresher!

2 shots, 4 seconds, 1 time

It is not a difficult test, but yes about 10 - 20% of people fail it the first time.

You will pass the written test as long as you listen to the instructor, and if the instructor is doing his job you will learn the material well enough so you can pass the test.

also remember it is a 10hrs minimal course requiered by the state. that does not include range time. I teach at Austin/Round Rock / Geogetown Tx.

Just wanted to add something that happened to me at Gander Mountain in Spring Tx.

I was in the store looking at some Gun candy and an older couple came in looking for a Springfield XDM 40 or 9.

So they are asking questions to the sales rep "Chris" and he is full of "empirical information" and trying to sell the 40SW to the 60+ yr old lady. I was listening until I hade enough of his BS.

I turned around and indicated to the husband of the nice lady that in my opinion I would consider the 9mm for his wife. He indicated why?

I asked him does your wife have arthritis? he indicated well yes she does.
Can she pull the slide on the 40SW ? She tried it and was not able to do it.
I asked her is she liked the way it felt and also messured her hand to the grip and trigger... she saw the big difference between the 40 and the 9...


I then indicated to the Sales rep "chris" show the nice lady the 9mm please.

and lord she was able to pull the slide just fine and the XDM is a bit light compared to the 40SW version..
she loved it. (I did not indicate ever that I was an instructor).

I was just doing it to help the couple out...They continued looking at the guns. I continued to look at my gun.

Then they asked about CHL classes that Gander mountain offers. The answer that the sales rep "chris" provided for the couple was..." Anyone can pass the Texas CHL course, even a monkey with a loaded gun can pass it. It is just a formality to the state of Texas, shoot wen I took my CHL class I made a smile from 15yrs on the head of my target; and I still past the test"

At that point I turned at him and I indicated...If you where one of my students you whould of failed the test, You give the CHL holders a bad name...I proceeded to talk to the manager about this guy, and indicated thatI was going to open a complaint with Texas DPS about the information provided by the rep.


A continued to shop and the couple found me to give thanks for the information provided..


You may be asking...well why the hell is he telling this story!?

Because we all as CHL holders give a good or bad impression about the gun community, the Texas CHL program, so it is our duty to keep the program alive and honest.
