The county that includes Chicago on Friday approved a tax on firearms to help pay the healthcare costs from gun violence, the first major U.S. metropolitan area to impose such a tax as a form of gun control.

Under the plan, Cook County, Ill., will impose a $25 tax on each firearm sold. The tax is expected to raise $600,000 in revenue in 2013.

With Friday's vote, the nation's second most populous county with nearly 5.2 million residents becomes the first major U.S. metropolitan area to impose a tax as a form of gun control, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

The Cook County board of commissioners voted 9 to 7 to approve the firearms tax.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who proposed the handgun tax, had earlier this week abandoned an additional proposed tax of 5 cents a bullet because the tax in some cases would have exceeded the price of ammunition.

Preckwinkle said that 670 victims of gun violence had been treated by the county's health system last year. The average cost per patient was $52,000.

There have been 443 murders in Chicago so far this year, surpassing last year's total of 435 and 22 percent more than in the same period a year ago, according to Chicago police.

Taxes on buyers or sellers of guns or ammunition have been proposed but failed in six states, including California, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Tennessee has a hunting-related 10-cent tax on sealed packages of shotgun shells and cartridges that applies to sellers. The money is used to support wildlife resources.

Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, has called the Cook County proposal another scheme to punish law-abiding firearm owners and dealers. He said it would prompt people to purchase weapons elsewhere.

If I lived in Cook County, which I would not, then I would definitely never purchase my firearms there. I would go outside the county line and not pay the tax. This has got to be one of the most futile efforts by this Draconian County and government I've heard.

IMO This is just a sign of things to come on a national basis.
It can come under legislation but that would mean that legislators would have to stick their necks out.
If it is imposed under Obama care then everybody is happy except gun owners.
Then it is Hey why stop at guns. Skateboards cause our healthcare system money too. Also Ski's and lift tickets. What about baseballs and footballs, they cause injury. Yeah and what about cigarettes.. ooppps that has been done already.
Think of it as a national sales tax on any item that has a warning label on it to help pay for health care. A Tax does not have to go through congress.
It is coming in some form or another.

Where is the opposition? Chicago residents should be busting down the doors of their city-county building demanding it not be passed or be immediately rescinded. Gun shops should refuse to collect it.

Typical of politicians, they expect every citizen of Cook County to only buy their guns in Cook County. They would never expect them to go to another county to buy their guns to avoid the tax.

I agree...

As with all things the leftist elitist control freaks do... the Cook County "tax" is a trial balloon sent up to see if putting onerous taxes onto rights faces any meaningful opposition. If there isn't any opposition the idea will take root all over the entire country... and the Feds will also get in on this whole new way of creating revenue to feed their own pockets.

However... don't worry... folks will still have the right to keep arms... it's just that after a while all the new taxes will cause a cheap Hi Point to cost $7500.00........

But never fear because enterprising big time criminals will simply start smuggling in guns by the boat load bought cheap in other countries... and sold on the streets to... the small time criminals.

Remember the federal luxury tax? It decimated the US yacht building industry and cost billions in losses to aircraft manufacturers because people just bought their planes and yachts elsewhere. The same thing will happen in Cook County with guns. How many gun shops can there be around there anyway? I can't imagine there'd be that many, but if they think they're going to collect $600,000 with this tax then I guess there must be quite a few. But this will never collect what they think it will. It may end up costing them money in lost revenues if the loss in sales drives some shops out of business. They're total idiots.

That's my point. These politicians throw taxes around like candy and expect big returns. Then when it doesn't they are shocked to find out that people will do what they have too to avoid paying the tax. They just never get it. But they have nothing but good intentions so they get a pass and re-elected.

Yep. Idiots elected by idiots, who read newspapers written by idiots and watch TV news anchored by idiots. And unfortunately you don't have to be smart to breed.

I expect that billboards will soon start appearing in Cook County for gun stores in the counties north, south and west. Gun stores in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Dupage, and Will Counties WILL clean up.

Landed at DuPage County Airport in a B-17 a few years back. Beautiful airport terminal. Off topic. Sorry.

Easy fix
Buy outside the county. Dealers will close shop and move outside the county. Economic "boost" for surrounding counties.
