It is Monday August 27th and the death toll from gun violence in Chicago continues to increase as 9 more people were killed and 22 more wounded over this past weekend.
Chicago's Superintendent of Police McCarthy says that we have a 'perception problem' that the numbers somehow are not 'that bad'.
Both Chicago Mayor Emmanuel and SoP McCarthy publically denounced the increasing gun violence calling for stricter gun laws as the solution so in an effort to clarify my 'perception' of this issue, I did a little research.
Chicago is fast on the way to becoming the murder capital in the US. Adding the 9 people who were recently killed this weekend, Chicago has seen 237 people killed by guns, and countless others wounded. That exceeds by twice the number of troops killed in Afghanistan during the same time period but lets expand that comparison.
Since 2001 when the US entered Afghanistan, there have been some 2000 troops killed in action. During that same time period more than 5000 people have been killed in the city of Chicago.
Do the math... you are 60% more likely to be killed in Chicago then you are in an active war zone!
Just last week, New York had a fatal shooting where one person (the criminal) was killed and 9 others wounded. It wasn't the criminal that shot the 9 other victims, it was the POLICE!
I think my perception of the problem is very clear. What isn't clear in my mind is why do the citizens of Chicago continue to elect these public officials that care more for the health and rights of violent gang members than they do the lawful citizens of their city.
