In the United States, at 18 you are now legally an adult. You can be arrested and/or charged as an adult, sign contracts and other legal documents, vote, join the military, get married, and several other rights are also granted to you.
In Oklahoma, the current age to defend yourself with a concealed weapon is 21. Now, at around 18 years of age many young adults are starting jobs, working towards getting degrees, and also moving further away from home at the same time. At 16 you can get a drivers license, and drive alone without a passenger. For many this age it will be their first time going to places such as the grocery store, gas station, their job, etc. completely alone; making them an easy target for criminals. The threats to our safety are growing by the day as drug dealing, sex traffic-ing, robbery, terrorism, and murders seem to be occurring more and more often, it is our right too be able to protect ourselves from these threats.
Oklahoma allows residents 18 and over to purchase handguns from private sellers but not federally licensed firearm dealers? So as an 18 year old, you are able to purchase a handgun at a gun show or off of a guns classified ad but you may not purchase from a licensed dealer where they background check and perform other safety precautions.
As an 18 year old Oklahoma resident, I want to be able to protect myself from these threats as I am virtually putting myself in harms way just by going to the store or stopping at the gas station.
If I am legally an adult in a few months, I should also legally be able to obtain a concealed carry license for my safety in the event that I ever needed to defend myself. By lowering the currently required concealed carry age of 21 to 18 years of age, many lives of young adults could potentially be saved and protected.
As stated above, the Oklahoma Concealed carry age is set at 21. How do I go about getting this changed to 18?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
