CCW Personal Info

So I finally made it to the county sheriff's office this past week to apply for my long awaited ccw permit. I'm just wondering that if my ccw is permitted, will my local police department get any
sort of notification that "this person at this address" has obtained a ccw permit? Also, is there any public information on how many people in my local town have obtained a ccw? This question is just a matter
of my own curiosity.

Thanks

Laws vary from state to state about releasing the kind of information you're asking about. You should go to your Profile and enter the state you reside in where it says "Location" so that people can attempt to answer your questions knowledgeably.

The site handgunlawUS may be able to help you out.

Your state police website may also have the answer for you.

Even in the event your state does this, (unlikely) how many

LEOs are going to make memorizing this list a priority?

Case in point: I'm in a rural part of Florida. A CCW is listed for a

patrol officer at a traffic stop, connected to your DL info, but otherwise

it's all pretty much unlisted, and you don't have to tell a cop you are armed

at a traffic stop, unless he asks. (They generally don't, here.) The information

is collected by the department of Agriculture, here. Many folks open carry on their

farms and plantations, with ratshot, or shotguns, for protection against snakes and such.

And it isn't much of an issue, for the police.

Other more urban states, like NJ, the cops go nutz if they see your kid waving a green water

pistol in the back seat. So it varies widely, from place to place. OTOH, many police departments

are coming to realize that a CC permit, rather than being a badge of shame, is actually a

clean bill of health for a LAC.

You can send a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to your sheriff or state police (whomever maintains these data) asking for demographics of licenses/permits issued. I file these regularly in Illinois for various information (totals, cancelled, revoked, denied, pending board review, etc.).

Assuming your state keeps names and addresses private, just don't ask for personally-identifiable information and you should get the data you want.

I was looking over Ohio's CHL laws and did not notice whether CHL records are closed to the public or not. They have to be available to the police so they can confirm your permit if you are stopped. It is highly unlikely the information is passed to the local police department. Why don't you ask the sheriff that issued the permit to you?

Was this information (notification) not discussed during your mandatory training class?

In OH the ccw is tagged to the DMV (don't remember if it is the drivers license or the plate off hand) so any cop that stops you (or potentially simply runs your plates) will know you have it. OH also has a duty to inform (if carrying) when "officially" interacting with LEO's. As for the local PD being informed by the county sheriff, nope doesn't work that way, and the information used to be open record on request, the press at one time was copying and publishing holders names in metropolitan papers but a number of sheriffs decided that they would no longer provide copies or allow them to photograph the records and if they wanted the information they had to copy the records by hand...fortunately (so-called) journalists are a lazy bunch these day's and couldn't be bothered. I know there was a move to make the list's closed to the public (including the press) but not sure what happened with it.

My CCW was finally issued yesterday from the sheriff yesterday. Only took 1 week from turning in the application to recieving my actual permit. (Kinda quick I thought) I asked him if this was public info and he told me that a law was passed that they didn't have to release this info, even to any kind of media (or any individual) and the only way any other police official gets your info is if you have an official interaction with them. This info is connected to your name through the BMV. I live in Ohio BTW.
