Lighthouse Outlet Mall in Michigan City, IN

I'll be going to the Lighthouse Premium Outlet Mall in Michigan City, IN tomorrow. I have Utah and Arizona non-resident CCW licenses and am an Illinois resident. I was planning on carrying but am curious if anyone knows if they allow CCW at this outlet mall or if it is banned? Only certain stores if any?

Thanks for any info and help.

Hey I live in Indiana and have been to the outlet mall in Mich. City several times.
Lighthouse Outlet mall is owned by Simon Malls. Simon has a no firearm policy on their properties. However, in Indiana posting a "No Firearms" sign carries no weight. You can CC or OC there all you want (In. is a carry state so you can OC or CC here. Whichever you're more comfortable with). If someone from the mall security or one of the managers of a store asks you to leave then you have to leave. If no one says anything then you're good to go. I've OC and CC at a local Simon mall and never had anyone say anything to me. Just don't put up a fight when they ask you to leave. I know a lot of firearm owners boycott Simon Malls but that's your choice. I don't because it's the only local mall. I think most of the local managment and security know that In. is a carry state and usually they just go with state laws. You get the occasional a-hole though that wants to be a hardass and asks you to leave. *coughHomeDepotcough*

Well I went ahead and carried at the Lighthouse Premium Outlet Mall. No looks, questions or anything from anybody. The only signs posted on the store doors was no food, drink or animals. Nothing about firearms. I didn't check very good on the entrance to the parking lot though. On the way out I looked over my shoulder as I drove out of the parking lot and did see a sign that said something about private property but that's all I had time to read. It might have said something about firearms or maybe it was just about loitering, posting of bills or something else. Can't be certain.

If anyone happens to go shop here maybe they can take a closer look at this sign and give a better report.

Interesting. I came across a statement of the policy of Simon Malls on the site, Second Amendment Check (Boycott Simon Malls | Second Amendment Check):

“Possession of any weapon at Simon malls, whether concealed or displayed openly, is in violation of mall policy. This policy is intended first and foremost to maintain a safe, secure and comfortable environment at our malls, which has always been our top priority, and to avoid any situation that could potentially place at risk the safety of our shoppers and employees.

Simon malls are private property, and like virtually every other facility in the community that is accessible by the public, ownership/management has the right to prohibit the possession of weapons, both displayed or concealed, other than licensed weapons carried by law enforcement personnel.

Julie Rigby – Longview Mall Manager”

What is interesting is the statement, "This policy is intended first and foremost to maintain a safe, secure and comfortable environment at our malls..." The reason I carry concealed is for the safety and security of my family and me, which provides me with a sense of comfort, knowing that we have a fighting chance while we wait for the police to respond if some deranged nut job decides to use that location to make his statement. So if I am carrying, it would seem, I am in line with the policy, especially sine I pose no risk to the safety and security of the other customers and employees.

Glad to hear you didn't have any problems. It doesn't really matter if they post a sign or not since the signs have no legal weight in Indiana. Law says you can't carry and you have to leave only if someone sees you carrying and they ask you to leave.

Hope you enjoy(ied) your stay! If you ever get a chance check out the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore that's just outside of town. Beautiful place.

The horrible irony isn't lost on me either. I like the statement: "...other than licensed weapons carried by law enforcement personnel."

Here in Indiana my permit to carry a firearm is cleared by local and state police agencies. Therefore I am licensed by law enforcement to carry a weapon for enforcing my personal protection. You just rearrange the words a bit and their statement fits me perfectly so I will continue to carry at Simon Malls wherever my permit is valid.

Of course, while I stand behind my observation regarding the irony of the statement, my own statement is still somewhat facetious. - despite the ongoing debate between me and BC1 and the idea of treating businesses as truly private property.

By the same token, most of us on this forum also realize that a concealed pistol license does not deputize anyone. The fact that law enforcement signed off on our background checks doesn't mean that we are authorized law enforcement - and I can tell you with certainty that the legal system and law enforcement officers will have a problem with your interpretation. I hope you are being facetious, but I know that there is a small handfull of people on this forum who really do believe that.
