CCW at Community Colleges, WA State

While I appreciate all input please try to keep this about WA. Knowing Virginia or Texas gun laws doesn't do me any good. I was wondering if anyone knew the state law regarding concealed carry on college (specifically community college) campuses in WA state. I knew campus policy usually forbids it but I'm only going to be there for a few weeks and frankly I could give a damn about their rules. Thanks for the help?

I have 2 in school at a CC and one in Grad School near Spokane. They do not allow Concealed Carry on the Wet Side that I know about. It is not covered by the RCW law, but the Student Administrative section called the WAC

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=132E-120-220

" (iii) Carrying firearms is prohibited."

Alternatives

The Knife laws have been revised under the the RCW but not the WAC , so options are really limited. Basically any knife that could hurt someone is prohibited.

" (i) Carrying, exhibiting, displaying, or drawing any weapon, such as a slung shot, sling shot, and club, metal knuckles, dagger, sword, or swing blade knife, or any knife of which is automatically released by a spring mechanism or other mechanical device, or any knife having a blade which opens, or falls, or is ejected into position by force of gravity, or by outward, downward, or centrifugal thrust or movement, or any other cutting or stabbing instrument or club or any other weapon apparently capable of inflicting bodily harm and/or property damage is prohibited."

That leaves a tactical Pen, or OC IMO.

My daughter carries OC and my sons just wing it, but they are big guys at least. Sad state of affairs at colleges in a state that otherwise is pretty good about guns.

The unicorn milk drinkers it appears got hold of the WAC seems.

It is not prohibited in state law. Individual colleges and universities have their own prohibitions that do not carry the weight of law. Failure to comply with their request to leave the campus falls under trespassing, not a firearms offense. WAC stands for Washington Administrative Code, by the way. And it is just that - Administrative, not criminal.

5) Can I carry at or near a school? Or College? (RCW 9.41.280) If you have a valid CPL and are picking up or dropping off a student you are allowed on the school grounds. Firearms are not permitted in school buildings (presumably k-12) . Colleges set their own policies, which ban lawfully carried guns (but do they have force of law?). South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia is the only college in this state we know of that does not specifically ban lawfully carried guns from their campus at this time.

Washington Gun Rights

If you don't give a damn about their rules, then just carry and keep quiet. Duh.

Yep, that was pretty much the plan. As it stands only my boss, and best friend know I carry on a daily basis anyways and that's cause I got them into shooting and carrying as well.

The point being that why even ask the question when you obviously plan to march to your own drummer anyway? If you don't care about the answer, the question is moot...

There is a whole world of difference in carrying concealed in violation of a rule where the consequences of violating that rule is that they will tell you to leave the campus, and carrying in violation of a state law where the consequences of violating that law might be a felony, a fine, jail time and loss of the right to possess firearms....don't you agree?

The OP asked a legitimate question to make an informed decision regarding whether to carry or not based upon what the potential consequences of his actions might be.

I guess I read his post wrong, but to me this means he could care less what the rules are and plans to ignore them regardless of what we suggest. I guess you do kind of sit in a high saddle...as do most of the officer corps...pretty impressed with yourself I would imagine. I personally would prefer to RESPECT the rules of whatever governing body established them, if I agree or not. If a mall says I can't carry there regardless of state law, I won't carry there...or go there for that matter, but I will respect their wishes.

I disagree this was a "legitimate" post as he already answered it before he clicked send.

Your post made my horse laugh so hard, I fell out of the saddle! Get over yourself, Kenai. I was not advocating one position or the other, carrying against the rules or not. I was simply explaining the difference between a rule, which carries no consequence other than being asked to leave the premises, and statute, which carries the consequence of going to jail, fines, and loss of firearms rights and stating the fact that there is no LAW in Washington state against carrying a firearm on a college campus.

The decision that jcreek had already made was that he would not let a college rule stop him, what he did not know was whether or not he would be violating a law by doing so, which we don't know if that would affect his decision or not.

The best way to turn a policy into a law is to ignore it and play by your own rules, you know it as do the rest of us.
