CCW and Firearms Course Advise Wanted

I have been getting into guns over the past year or two, and last year my boyfriend bought me my first pistol, a S&M 9mm 1500 series, with the agreement that I would take a handgun safety course before we transfer it over to my name. I have been looking more into it and plan on getting a CCW here in Sacramento County, but wanted to take the handgun safety course first. Looking at all the costs, it adds up pretty fast. And I've found a couple different courses that might help...Women's 4 hour Self Defense/Basic Pistol 101 Course, Carry with Confidence, etc. I want to be able to feel confident with my gun before getting a CCW as I want to be able to be strong if I ever need to use it, rather than becoming a victim to fear and having the predator take my gun from me. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm not in CA so I can't recommend any courses (unless, of course, Kathy Jackson of Cornered Cat comes by you!), but the whole predator taking your gun away is pretty much just something used by liberals to tell women they shouldn't have guns. If you're determined to hang on to your gun, it's pretty hard for someone else to take it away from you. I did some handgun retention training, and my partner was much larger than I am, and I still had no trouble at all keeping it, even at the very beginning of the class. Plus, that front sight really hurts your hand! Be aware of what's going on around you (check out Marc MacYoung.com to figure out what to look for) so you'll see a predator before he pegs you as a victim, and you'll be keeping your gun.

I'm in Sacramento too and I go to The Gun Range in North Highlands. The Gun Range. You may want to consider Basic Pistol - NRA first Steps followed by the 16 hour CCW class if you pass the initial interview at the Sheriff's office. The Carry with Confidence is more a follow up class after you get the CCW.
