CC A Long Gun?

Now this is kinda a hypothetical, as I don't see the need for it in most cases (except maybe when a guy in ballistic armor with an ar-15 shows up in your theater?) but has anyone given a thought to carrying a long gun (or pistol version thereof) concealed? How would you approach it? Obviously it's summertime and you can't get away with wearing a big long coat nor would you want to. Maybe a backpack with a 'pocket' under it you could reach into to retrieve the weapon?

Speaking of weapon, not sure what would lend itself to the task of concealing AND being able to handle a heavily armed assailant with body armor, perhaps a Draco AK Pistol would do the job best? Or better yet, a SBR'd side folding stock krinkov style ak? Of course there's always the option of open carry but while most businesses around here are okay with handgun carry, they will probably not be so okay with someone walking in and shopping with an AR strapped to their back.

And yes, it is legal to conceal a long-gun here in AZ, could technically conceal carry an M2 browning if you wanted, and could figure out how. Just wondered if anyone else ever gave a serious thought to the idea.

On a side-note, any idea how we could CC that m2 browning? That might be just enough gun for any situation....

In Washington State that piece of paper I carry when I carry my gun says "STATE OF WASHINGTON LICENSE TO CARRY CONCEALED PISTOL". The lettering is in capitol letters on the license. The key word is pistol. The carrying of 'long guns' loaded at least in a car is illegal. States have different laws on this subject so it is a must to check out your own State law(or any State you might visit) on this subject. I am not against the idea of you or anyone else carrying for self defence whatever you want but IF you ever had to use an AK it MIGHT look bad to a jury. Imagine the prosecuter or the lawyer for the person you shot showing the jury the gun you used and declaring that with a weapon like that you were just looking for trouble. Please no hate mail. I am NOT in favor of any AWB. There are many so called 'assult weapons' that I would like to own, but cant afford it. It is too bad but people dont really know what these so called 'assult weapons' really are and our liberal press isnt helping.

As I stated I'm in AZ. Our permit is a "Concealed Weapon Permit" and covers everything from a pocket knife to a machinegun so long as its legally possessed. That said I wasn't really looking to discuss legality so much as explore the practical issues of doing it. I agree it would be a legal can of worms if you had to use it, but if it came to that you might just be alive because of it.

You need to watch lots of episodes of Highlander. When you figure out how they always carry full size swords around, you'll have the practicality of it figured out.

I do agree, the old saying 'better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6' comes to mind. The backpack idea may be the most practical way, but I would question the time it would take to bring the gun into action, which is important in any encounter where you are forced to use the gun. Also MOST(not all) long guns require both hands where a handgun(in most cases) only takes one hand. In my younger days I did alot of backpacking and I did entertain the thought of some kind of long gun to carry in some way as to be easily accessable. I came to realize that no matter how I did it having a handgun was much faster. Then of course how long is the long gun? And do remember that a rifle bullet is almost always more powerful than a handgun so IF you miss that bullet could easily hurt or kill an innocent person hundreds of yards away. The bullet penetration into body armour would be an advantage BUT it also means possible penetration into walls of nearby homes and businesses. Im not trying to discourage you. As a matter of fact you got me curious. Let me know what you come up with. Perhaps a LEGAL short barreled shotgun?

However i must note that getting shot even while wearing body armor sucks! So if a BG is wearing armor you'll still be able to bring him to least his knees with almost anything which should give you an easy head shot if absolutely necessary.

Well I guess technically a draco with no stock is considered a 'handgun' by the letter of the law. Speed of deploying it might be an issue. Alternately I wonder about carrying a bug that is better suited to armor, a Tokarev is thin and easy to conceal and will pass right through level III armor and ballistic helmets like a hot knife through butter using fmjs. Wondering if my .357 sig carry gun would do the same with a lightweight fmj bullet pushing over 1500 fps. As far as over-penetration being an issue I don't buy into that argument, one must always be responsible for what's behind their target, you can't ever count on the bullet stopping in the badguy, because what if you miss? and you are likely to miss more often than hit in a true combat situation, and even with a jhp they do not stop in lumber or drywall any quicker than a fmj, only a hit on something fleshy does the trick.

An AR15 pistol with a 5-7" barreled PDW-style (no buffer tube - action spring) upper, 20/30rd magazine, chambered in a potent round such as 6.8SPC. For optics scratch the irons and go with a Trijicon RMR or a similar micro red-dot.

As for carrying it, an AR15 pistol this small will be fairly easily concealed under a suit coat (have tried it, and I'm not exactly in the best shape either so odd shaped things stick out). You could also have it in a briefcase or a gym bag that you carry. If you were planning on keeping it in a backpack, you could go with one of those Bullet Blocker backpacks and kill a couple birds with one stone, but keep in mind the amount of time it's going to take you to retrieve it is maybe 10x the amount of time it would take you to draw a holstered handgun and fire a few shots, even if you practiced religiously.

Or you could get a Magpul FMG9 and keep it in your back pocket\inside coat pocket.

The only way to really be certain is to actually read your state's current codes. You can probably get them and copy them off of your legislatures websites. Lots of well-intentioned websources provide summaries of those laws, and most of them are probably correct. But to be certain, you have to go to the source.

For example, below is what the law reads in my state of Arkansas. And even it is open to some interpretation...ie the "fired with one hand" part. I'm not sure teh .500 S&W counts. Lol...not by me anyway.

But under this code (again, specific to Arkansas) a full length AR-15 or Pump Shotgun would be out of the question. So would sawed-off shotguns, etc., since my permit specifies "any legal handgun."

Hope this gives you some ideas. I'd copy the state regs and keep them in my wallet since even some of the best police officers don't know all the laws completely.

5-73-301 Definitions.

As used in this subchapter:
(1) "Director" means the Director of the Department of Arkansas State Police;
(2) "Handgun" means any firearm with a barrel length of less than twelve
inches (12") that is designed, made, or adapted to be fired with one (1) hand;
and
(3) "Concealed" means to cover from observation so as to prevent public view.
