CC .22 Cal??

Ok guys, question?? Would you carry a Mark 1 through 3 .22Cal for CC?? Would a 22 bullet do the job if needed??

OK... Opinion and observation..
Can a .22 (short or Long Rifle or Magnum??) do the job...
The answer is: It's probably better than a brick, and will do the job "sometimes".. (Magnum more than a short)

.22 doesn't have the stopping power of most calibers.. It just doesn't ave the Ft lbs of force.. So instead of the BG getting hit with a sledge hammer he gets hit with a tack hammer..
If you are at the beach (Nobody wearing much clothing), and you shoot a little guy, it's likely to slow them down if not stop them..
If you are in a big northern city where it's 35 degrees out and everyone is bundled up in leather etc.. Then it's probably NOT going to do such a great job..
.22's are preferred by many assassins.. But their goal is to slip right up behind their target and put two in your head.. This is not the CC self-defense scenario..

The .22 is known as the surgeons nightmare.. It tends to go in and then bounce around rather than go with straight penetration. This can cause quite a bit of damage, but it may take some time before the BG stops his attack and that is what you are looking for as a defense weapon.. To STOP the attack.

For most people the cut off for caliber is at the .380.. Some just above, some just below.. Then you have the folks that don't feel that a .357 Magnum is enough..

Like I said.. It's probably better than a brick (and easier to conceal), but not preferred by statistics or experience.

Why assassins prefer it and why I say if you're comfortable and accurate with it, why not?

On the effectiveness scale with brick at one end and 10mm on the other, I'd put it well past halfway towards the 10mm side of things, followed by the rest .380 yada yada, on up.

Back in time, before the really small 380s, 32s, & 9s, I carried a Berreta 21A in 22LR and/or a High Standard 22Mag Deringer at times. Did I feel I was well armed? No, but it beat throwing rocks. I pocket carry a Kahr PM40 now most the time; sometimes a Diamondback 380 when nothing else makes the size cut. I would still rather have a 22 with me than no firearm at all.

When I hear .22, I think of the 300 lb, PCP using, out of control dude that wants to take my head off. I may be over-compensating but 14 rds of .40 180g Hydra-Shok seems to make me feel better.

The thing is, the Mark I, II & III are all pretty large and heavy guns. If you are going to carry them, why not carry a gun the same size in a larger caliber.

If a small .22 is all you can commit to carrying every day, all day, then carry the .22. The important thing is to carry every day, all day.

if you want to carry a .22LR in your pocket. You need to make your rounds count.

think head shot..head shot... a .22LR is a small caliber, but placed in the right area the human body will stop functioning.

but if you miss...well your in deep trouble.

Nothing against carrying .22LR but it does have its disadvantages.

but you are not going to have to worry about over penetration ..hehehe :pleasantry:

Again make them count and some good shot placements and it will do the job, will take a few hits, maybe or maybe not.

the real question is. Do you want to trust your life and the life of your love ones to a .22cal round.

the the rimfire ammunition sometimes does not fire at all. Just think about it. if you get 2 failures in a row. Oh hell your in deep crap or your half way dead.

ultimate choice is yours my friend.

Yeah, A Mk I-III is not exactly an ideal carry weapon, regardless of the caliber.

When total discretion is absolute and weather dictates dress, I often carry a Walther P22. When you disconnect the brain from the body they both become useless blobs.

I disagree with this statement in general.. The head is a smaller target and is easily moved by the other person.. Center mass, Center mass.. Bigger target and no so easily moved by the other person.
IF you should miss the head, then where will the bullet go?? There may be no OVER penetration, but with NO penetration, the bullet can travel quite a distance..
IMHO.

i would not carry a 22. for me it does not have the stopping power behind it. to me its a can shootin gun, not a cc gun. plus its a pretty good size piece. id rather carry a 9 or a .40. i chose to carry a xd- subcompact .40. to me its more than enough gun to get whatever job done.

I have a Mark III.

Given its size and weight, I'd never consider carrying it. I can't understand why you'd want to carry such a large gun with such minimal stopping power. Agreed, it's much more accurate than most CC guns, but since you'd likely need to carry it in a shoulder holster...why not carry a .45ACP?

If that's all you have, carry it. A 22 has killed more people than any other round. I can't prove that, but I have read that many times and not on the Net. I carry a 357 Mag and my Girlfriend carry's a 38 Spl.

The reason why i asked was to see what everyone had to say, I wont be getting the 22 pistol but last week i had to sell my P95 Ruger cause of big Financial issues and i cant afford a 9 or anything for a very long while....:hang3:

I would not carry a .22 on purpose, but if it was all I had I would rather have it than nothing. I would make the load a high or hyper velocity load to get as much penetration as possible. I would carry the .22 until I could afford a heavier caliber pistol. JMHO.:yu:

Sorry to hear about the financial problems. We had that about a year and a half ago. During that time I had to sell off some of my guns, and was even carrying a Walther P22 as my CCW for a while. Hand in there.

I carried a Sig Sauer Mosquito for a short period of a summer until I came across the M&P40c I carry now. It was small enough to hide vs. the 4" 357 mag revolver I carry in cool/cold weather.

In most cases not all however, the BG seeing the gun will be enough to cause a change in game plans on his/her part. Most not all, are looking for the easy mark and when any possible resistance that could lead to serious injury/death is offered by the potential victim, they will break off... It is not 100% guaranteed, but noting in life really ever is.

Learn how to use it and become proficient with it and make shot placement count. As most have eluded to, it beats spitting, slapping, hair pulling, and rock throwing hands down..

A Ruger MKI-III would not be the ideal handgun for carry, but under a coat or winter layers I guess it would do.

Lots of financial issues going on now for many people. I wish you good luck and hang in there.
