At the risk of sounding new........ Why do I notice some people having to go register their firearms?

I just thought it was wierd to have to register a firearm that already has a paper trail before you leave the store. The only firearms I've ever brought to the police station are those I have checked out before I buy from a private party.
it is true that we have to get a permit to even own a handgun. we also have to register each handgun before we can take possesion of it (long guns we don't). however once we have we have are permit it's forever, unless we do something stupid. we also can carry in alot of places other people can't. i've read on here about not carrying in places that serve alchahol(sp), places with "no guns aloud" signs and a handfull of other restrictions. not a problem here. the only place we can't carry here is federal building's.
well i got the letter in the mail today saying not only no but hell no. i truly believed that i had wrote a good reason, in a good letter, with all the the proper grammar and the rest of the bull crap. you can be assurred that i will be voting for a different judge come the next election. if and when we get a "real" judge in, i will be reapplying.

I live in Cayuga County and have an unrestricted permit. You really do need an impeccable resumé and cover letter to get it! Having good connections will also play in your favor.it's all right. lucky for me i live in the country, and 99.9% of the time i can justify why i'm carrying according to their "restrictions". there's always something in "season", besides concealed mean's concealed. all in do time, i hope.

Most counties in NY list the handguns that you own on the back of your permit. However, Cayuga says you don't need this as long as the gun is registered with the department. I went to buy ammunition at Wal-Mart and some punk kid probably not old enough to buy a pack of cigarettes refused to sell to me because my gun was not listed on my permit. Needless to say, I wanted to strangle this kid, but even the older managers did not allow the sale! Make sure you have your gun listed on the back of your permit, oh yeah and it will cost you $5 per gun you add to the list.
I called the sheriff's office about getting my gun listed on my permit, but they refuse to return my calls.

You live in a state with equally bad laws. So he has to register his gun. So what? In NYS he can carry on public transportation, in a bar or restaurant, in a church, bank or municipal building. He can shoot a burglar for merely breaking in his home. Therre's no open carry, but then again who cares.
In NM it is unlawful to board or attempt to board a bus while in possession of a firearm upon the person or effects and readily accessible while on the bus. NM has no castle doctrine law. NM requires 15 hours of classroom and range instruction. In NM you cannot carry in a bar. That's in-your-face gun control. NM claims to be a "shall-issue" state but it is clearly not so. Anyone can be denied a permit based on the opinion that he is a risk to public safety.
This isw not a slam against NM. It's a wake-up call to everyone who thinks they have it made in ANY state. All have crazy provisions. Fed court decisions have ruled you have no right to carry under th second amendment. If your next election findsw democrats in control they can stop carry without any problem.

Walmart has this policy everywhere. I once bought two boxses of 100 rounds of 9mm. The kid who checked my license looked like he just got his drivers license. He scrutinized it like he was ATF. My wife walked up as I was getting ready to pay. She commented that it was a good price and I should buy more. i aksed for another box. THE KID ASKED TO SEE MY LICENSE AGAIN. I said, "do you think my license was revoked in the past three minutes?" Nuts.
The Wal-mart in Harriman never asked me till the last time i went 3 weeks ago. Also to my knowledge, and BC1or nogods correct me if I'm wrong, if you use an "illegal gun," to protect your home in NYS or NYC you cannot be criminally charged. I am also happy that I do not have to examine the books of the place I want to have dinner in to see if they derive 60% of their income from food or not or which side I can eat on.

There's a few things to consider here.
Walmart is trying to comply with the laws in NYS. It is illegal for any store to sell pistol specific ammunition to a person not authorized to possess a pistol or revolver. See NYS Penal Law §265.35(4). Any Walmart store who sells pistol specific ammo without checking license validity is guilty of a B Misdemeanor. However the state is split on who will sell ammo. Some stores ask, some don't. At the gun show large groups of inner-city gang-banger looking kids buy 9mm, .40 and .45 by the thousnds without a license check.
Regarding using an illegal gun within the home for self-defense... the law was put there to keep members of a household from being charged with a crime for using someone else's gun to thwart a crime despite not having a permit to own or carry a gun. You're allowed to defend your self using someone else's illegal gun without fear of reprisal.
NYS Penal Law §265.03 - Criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree. A person is guilty of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree when (4) Such person possesses any loaded firearm. Such possession shall not, except as provided in subdivision one or seven, constitute a violation of this section if such possession takes place in such person's home or place of business.
A case in Middletown, NY was overturned by the NYS Appellate Court in 2011. Defendent Raymond Zayas heard someone banging violently on his door. He fired multiple rounds from his illegal Glock through the door hitting the officer outside. He was initially convicted of numerous counts, including criminal possession of a weapon. He and his neighbors claimed they heard no police warning so he didn't know who was breaking-in. The appelaate court determined that in NYS you may shoot through the door at someone who is trying to gain entrance for purposes of causing harm. In a forced entry one is allowed to assume harm will occur. Because the shooting qualified for exemption under NYS Penal Law Article 35 - Defense of justification Mr. Zayas could not be charged with a gun crime. Charges were dropped and a deal will now be offered to Zayas.

Agreed with homebuilt. One of the good things about living in the Empire State is that if you are one of the fortunate mortals who lives outside NYC and who can get a carry permit easily (essentially shall issue with lots of paperwork), there are very few places where you cannot carry. Certain federal buildings, schools/universities, and courts are the only places off limits. If you are issued a permit from a county outside of NYC, it's not valid in the City unless you're passing through "continuously and uninterrupted." If you have a permit from NYC, you're golden throughout the state.
On a side note, when did Cayuga County start issuing licenses with "restrictions?" About five years, possibly sooner, they did not do that. Perhaps it varies with the judge?

I can understand about Walmart not selling ammo to an individual without a valid license, but I do have a valid license. My guns, however, are not listed on the back of it. I recently was at the PSB and the clerk there reiterated that it is not necessary to have the firearms printed on the back of the permit. After telling her about Walmart, she stated that I could pay an exorbitant price for a new license with them printed on it OR I she could print out a small slip of paper with the guns listed at no cost. I took the latter option.
As far as restrictions on Cayuga, I don't know. I do not have any on my license and I got it in 2009. I had a lot of people with impeccable credentials on my side though, so even with the Hon. Thomas Leone (Democrat I think) I made out ok. However, I cannot think of anyone who has a non-restricted license unless they received it many decades ago.
