Carrying...any Christian Perspective?

I am brand spanking new here. Have not yet been granted a CCW permit. I am looking to become educated before doing so. And no, I am not a troll, just new.

I also happen to be Christian, and was wondering if there are any Christians on here that have a believers perspective on carrying. I ask because in conversations with my wife regarding carrying, she states she thinks I must have other motivations rather than trusting the Lord.

Try doing a search on here and you should find severa threads on this subject. I am not a Christian but I do believe there are several biblical references regarding carrying weapons for defense...various types, but the idea is the same. I also believe that if there was a god, he/she would think it prudent to protect yourself...I don't think a god would want every believer to be a martyr, if so, there wouldn't be any followers left. Keep in mind this is just my opinion and I expect many other comments both for and against. I don't carry a gun because I want to use it, I carry a gun so I can defend my family or myself if I am forced to.

God helps those that helps themselves.....a more accurate actual translation from the original script of THOU SHALT NOT KILL is THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT MURDER. Hope that helps...God bless.

Welcome. I am an ordained Christian minister and as I read the bible you have a responsibility to protect your wife. But you might point out to her when she brings up the 'trust the Lord idea' you could point out how the Jews fought many wars in the Old Testament with the blessings of the Lord. They did not sit back and say 'let God take care or it' but took action. You might also point out that while driving you and her both trust the Lord, you still put on your seatbelts for safety. Carrying a gun is the same thing. The Lord doesnt always send bolts of lightning to change things, but uses many ways. You might also ask her if she has ever been to a doctor? Some sick or injured people might refuse to see a doctor saying 'trust in God', but God can and does use doctors to heal. So why cant God use a gun to protect you and your wife? I carry a gun often and have had to pull it out in self defence, but my wife who suffers from arthritus was with me and if I had not had that gun both of us could have been killed. It was the sight of the gun that stopped the attack. I believe that God used my training and that gun to save our lives. I could go on forever and perhaps if you like you can send me a Private Message for more information. I wont try to convert you to my denomination,as most of my ministry is in prison ministries. Hope this helps.

Luke 22:36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one.
I am a Christian also and as men we are charged by God to protect our family from spiritual as well as earthly treats. Trusting God does not mean you are not to be prepared for things that happen.

Very excellent points. Especially the part about God not always sending bolts of lightening.

I know she trusts me, and eventually she'll see that my motivations are to be able to protect her and my boys. I am a paramedic, an I believe God uses me to help those in need.

SGB thanks for the link! I'll check that out.

There has been very good points brought up here and i agree with them. As a christian i too beleive we must protect ourselfs just like god uses doctors to heal he helps us use our abilities to protect. I also carry to church every week because no place is off limits to bad guys.

This is a question that comes up quite a bit.
I have some handouts for my CCW class to help those with this question.
The churches as a whole falls short on teaching this subject, I believe the Bible is very clear.
As listed above Luke 22:36 the gun is the modern day sword. If you do not have a gun sell your coat and get one. Another way of saying that is, having a gun may be more important than keeping warm.

I guess the arguement against might be "if a Bad Guy attacks me, maybe that's His will. So no need to carry."

Well, if that's what God really wanted, you're carrying would not change that. So carry anyway and let Him choose the outcome, not a BG.

Or you could stop believing in Bronze Age superstitions and save yourself the trouble of having to find some theological rationalization for what you're going to do anyway.

In the Jewish religion you have an obligation to protect yourself and your family. In our modern times I would interpret that as meaning a responsible CCer is well within his or her religious beliefs to protect yourself from the imminent threat of death. "Thou shall not commit murder" would be the correct commandment. Murder would be the wonton ending of a life; protecting yourself, at least IMO and my appreciation of my religion, would not be murder. Some refer to the commandment as "thou shalt not kill", which, IMO, is incorrect---butchering animals for food is killing and I do not believe that falls into the category of a commandment violation. Murder and killing are very different. If Christianity derives its beliefs from the Jewish religion and the commandments given to Moses by G-d, my Jewish teachings should be consistent with Christian ideals and responsibilities as they relate to the commandments and being CC.

God helps those who help themselves. In other words....most of the time you're on your own. That's why I always carry a "friend" of sorts.

OP;
I think you'l find the CC community has a LOT of Christians that partake.

Thankfully, there are very few idiots. But, there is a fair share of them that come on forums specifically to mock Christianity. (I just wonder how many have the stones to go to some of the muslim forums and mock Islam as "superstition".)

If your wife was being violently attacked, which would she rather you do: pray for her and the criminal or act to stop the attack.

Peter carried a sword, even when they went out to pray in the garden; Jesus obviously knew about it (harder to conceal a sword). That helped me get past this question. It's likely all/most of the apostles were armed most of the time, because of robbers or wild animals as they traveled between cities.
