Carry in California

I will be flying into California in a little while. Of course, I know all the normal stuff...my CCW is not valid there. Has to be locked, all that kind of good stuff. I am good on the weapon capacity, not a problem.

My question is, what is a CA compliant locked case? I like the looks of these Link Removed I will be carrying that with the ammo and mag separate, in my computer bag.

Is that legal? Any tips?

Looks like any of those would be acceptable. I carry my firearm in a locked case in the backseat of my truck. And, the ammo in a range bag in the bed of the truck (my truck has a locking bed cover and tailgate). The way the law reads it is tricky, but I was informed by a local sheriff deputy that as long as the gun was locked up and the ammo was in a separate part of the vehicle you're good. He said do not carry gun and ammo in the same place in your vehicle no matter what kind of case they were in. In fact, he said I could have my ammo in a ziploc bag in the front passenger floor and the gun in a locked case in the backseat. My best advice is just don't get stopped by law enforcement and you'll be fine. This is California, after all. We like for you to come spend your money...even if it's just to hire a lawyer. Lock the ammo in the case with the gun, so it is behind a lock as well. Better check to make sure that lifejacket thing is acceptable for airline travel. I doubt that it is. Why not just pay $5.00 for a standard pistol case from a hardware or sporting goods store?

California law does not recognize concealed weapon permits from other states; therefore, they would not be held valid. If you wish to transport a handgun during your California visit, it should be carried unloaded in a locked container. In the absence of a suitable container, you may secure the unloaded handgun in the locked trunk of a passenger car. Ammunition may be kept in the same container or trunk, but the handgun must remain unloaded with no rounds in the cylinder and no loaded magazines in the magazine well.If you have additional questions, contact the California Department of Justice at 916-227-3703.

If passing through California between two other states, you can use FOPA - but the ammo in a ziploc bag would not comply with the requirements of FOPA:

I paid $5.00 for a pistol case from my ACE hardware store that was like this, with the two slide locks. Two standard padlocks locked the slide locks closed. Big enough for the gun, both magazines out of the gun, and a 20round box of ammo all in one convenient place, airline and California compliant. I think mine had a metal pin through the hinge, though.

Thanks for the comments, folks. I have a case, similar to the cheap one posted above. Also, I just got a Pelican case for flying. The lifejacket looked cool for just having in your bag, but the problem is, there is nowhere to lock your ammo up.

Of course, the real answer is to not have any encounters with LEO. Time will tell on that one.
