carjacking scenario

i went to a very good situational awareness and defense class sponsored by 'fighting chance' july 8th class. it was alot of fun and learned alot too.
one of the scenarios they gave us was as follows:
you're at a red light car in front car behind you and on the sides a man comes up with a gun on you demanding you get out of your vehicle.....no one else is in the car with you
what would you do?
in this scenario i tried to fire at him and got shot by the pretend bad guy..i've been thinking on that scenario since that class ended and was wondering if taking my key out of the ignition and throwing them might made a difference or honking the horn or pretending i didn't hear him till the light changed??? any ways i'd like to get more input on that scenario from the posters here
would like to know how the posters here instructors and other permit holders would have dealt with the situation
thanks

How come he shot you first then ? I would throw my keys and tell them please stop that kind of stuff and when I get out shoot them .. In my mind that's what I would do . Real life who knows

In that situation, I would give him the car. Thats why you have car insurance. You can replace the car, but you most likley can not fix a bullet to the head. Just because you have a gun for protection doesnt make you bullet proof. Just my opinion. I would rather walk home and see my wife and son than die over a car.

it is said you can't outdraw a drawn gun though
i got shot justboxin because he already had his gun drawn and i was trying to be sneaky not letting the bg see me unholstering but he did and got me......he was standing to where a good quick door open wouldn't hit him or distract him from keeping his eye on me with his gun trained on me so ....best yes i think to give up the vehicle but dang i surely don't want to have to do that

I'd be tempted to put my foot on the accelerator and gun it but probably wouldn't. I'd be more afraid of the shark attorney the whiplash victim hired than the carjacker!

Reaction never ever beats action climb out of the car and let him have the car, might even give you the ability while he is climbing into a car he thinks he has, to pull your weapon and take you car home along with whatever weapon he was carrying, Basic give him the car. While in my car I carry cross draw, have to climb out of car and this could switch advantage. Until it actually happens there is no way to know.

You should always have enough room ahead of you to accelerate out of danger. Even if it means clipping the person ahead of you, just punch it and get out of there. That's what car insurance is for anyways.

What would you do if the danger was not a bad guy, but a semi that lost his brakes? Always leave yourself an escape while driving.

what's to stop him from shooting you as you try to flea? hard left turn on him might knock him over if he don't move first out the way but good thinking firefighten with leaving yourself an out

Assuming this is a drivers side approach - As soon as I would have noticed the individual in my peripheral vision I would have drawn and positioned my sidearm across my lap pointed at him just below the the glass. At the first hint of his firearm I would raise my sidearm to the glass, muzzle pressed against the glass and I would have instantly begun firing. Situational Awareness and a pre conceived plan = survival. And I'd like to thank all the Instructors above for their input here in the Instructors Corner.

that's some serious situational awareness there sgb but what if he was just an ordinary guy and just came close to the vehicle and happened to look in and saw your firearm pointed his way? then what???

As a new internet expert you should have all the answers, figure it out on your own.

not saying i have all the answers at all sgb i'm just asking a question is all trying to learn and consider all possibilities .......please don't take it personal or anything but i think my question is valid so please tell me what would you have done then is what i want to know if you would be kind enough to contemplate what you would do if that were the case

My thoughts exactly

Gotta ask what exactly, is this guy going to do once he gets your car? If you can't drive away what makes you think he can?

treo red lights eventually turn green ............which gives me another idea that i could have quickly left my vehicle and alerted the driver behind and in front what happened in hopes they would try to keep him blocked in
just things i think about now more than ever being new with cwfl ........and it's good mental training imo to do so

Well it goes to show that you can still be vulnerable even if you have a gun, if someone else has a gun and their gun is already drawn on you.

Sure, you are going to get shot, if you try to draw on someone who has already got the draw on you.

When I go through parts of Oakland where car jackings are common, when it is unavoidable, I keep a goodly distance away from the car ahead of me, and I leave myself an escape route, usually by staying in a lane where I can either accelerate to the left or to the right, certainly not boxed in at the center.

Then with situational awareness watch to see if anyone is approaching on foot.

If they are, get your gun out then.

But even better, accelerate suddenly from being stopped and use your escape route to speed away.

Otherwise it is always better to have someone who is a really good shot with great reflexes riding shotgun with you, just like The Wells Fargo Stage Company did.
