It's all about the cant..
I've found that, for driving, a hip holster canted forward "FBI style" sitting at about 3:30 works for me. It puts the gun at an angle where a straight up right-hand draw is possible. You just have to make sure your cover garment (coat, vest, or whatever) isn't snagged between gun and seat belt.
Makes me wonder if that's what the FBI had in mind when they decided on the unusual "butt forward" holster style?
