can anyone tell me if a S&W j frame is the same as a Taurus model 85 as far as size and holster options?

Yes, I have them both and use the same holster for each. I also have the 7 shot Taurus and it's too big for the 5 shot holster.

OK thanks because i had ordered a holster from blackhawk for a S&W J frame 5 shot snub nose and my Taurus wouldn't fit in it. do i need to loosen it up alot for it to fit or can i just shove it in the holster? and what holster would you recommend?

If you have a holster that is specifically made for a J-Frame, it won't fit. You would have to use a universal type for a 2" Snub. You will have to order for a Model 85 Taurus if you wont a fitted holster.

i tried that and no one seems to have anything other than the nylon holster for it. I've gone threw 4 nylon holsters and as far as I'm conserderned their junk. the holster i ordered was for a S&w j frame but i thought it would work considering their both pretty much the same size.

Mine is a simple IWB leather w/belt clip. If the Blackhawk is specific for the S&W it may not fit due to small differences in the controls on the frame etc... Your probably have to get one for your specific model.

I prefer sommething with a button like the blackhawk holsters have

is it leather, kydex, or what material? if kydex, use your wife's hair dryer to heat it till the plastic is soft, shove the unloaded gun into it and let it harden around your gun. if leather, wrap the unloaded gun in a plastic bag, wet the leather with rubbing alchohol, and shove the gun and bag into the leather. let it dry.
