Can a person write-off Tactical Training on their taxes?

Calling all Tax Consultants... I have invested in a bit of firearms training and tactical simulations training. Wondering if there was any way to claim a tax write-off on any special training related to my Conceal Hand Gun Licenses I am registered having. Don't you just love tax preparation.

I know that business expenses can generally be deducted, so if your training can be called a business expense there is a good chance that you can write it off. However, if you train and carry for non-business related reasons (self defense, enjoyment, etc.) then no, you can not deduct it.

You a cop? Military? Firearms instructor? If so, it can. As well as ammo, travel to and from, and ancillary gear.

Yes, but only if:

1. You're self-employed in a field where the safe and effective employment of firearms is a common requirement.
2. The training would be considered both routine and necessary by most professionals in that field. Thus, basic firearms for a security guard would quality, but advanced tactics might be considered acceptable only if you're protecting high-profile businessmen or public figures (actors or politicians) against kidnapping, extortion, or terrorism.
3. If you're not self-employed, then your employer has made it a requirement, in writing, for your job.
4. You keep all written records.
5. The expenses exceed what's allowable under your standard deduction.

Travel to and from a place of work is not deductible, unless it is in excess of your normal work-related travel and your employer does not reimburse you.

You must be able to cite chapter and verse in the IRS regs. I suggest you become familiar with the appropriate regs:
