Campus carry bans, a failed system?

The Virginia Tech incidents occurred on just one campus, in just one state. Similar events have occurred on campuses throughout the country, each one a gun-free zone. How many more such incidents will need to occur before college administrators realize that gun bans simply do not protect the students, faculty, and staff from unpredictable acts of gun violence?

A failed system for sure, I have a friend at tech that is a Marine, holds a TN handgun permit, and taught a basic firearms class here in TN for 2 years before he moved off for military and school. Yesterday he was stuck defenseless in a classroom full of his peers all sitting and waiting to become victims.

So on top of denying their 2A rights, they would not allow them to leave?

"Hey, we think there's an active shooter on campus, so everybody just sit tight, and let's just hope he doesn't pick OUR building, ok?"

Dismal failure - Contact your Representatives to support HR 2613

I am one of those working for a repeal of the federal Gun Free School Zones Act (GFSZA)(HR 2613), as well as legislation in Michigan that would do away with all other gun free zones not covered by the GFSZA. The numbers are clear. Including the most recent incident at VT, since the GFSZA was initially passed in 1990 there have been 217 shootings involving educational institutions and at least 15 involving churches resulting in a total of 704 casualties (deaths/injuries/hostages). If you add hospitals, shopping centers/stores, etc., those numbers escalate. And as they found out in Norway, a country with strict gun control laws, such laws do nothing to guarantee safety. The numbers speak conclusively to the failure of "gun free" or "pistol free" zones to 1) prevent individuals from bringing weapons onto the property in the first place, and 2) keep shootings from occurring. And to those who insist that waiting for police to respond is the only defense mechanism needed, at least one study showed that every minute it takes police to respond to a shooting event, the number of casualties can increase by up to 7. Gun free zones have managed to accomplish one significant result: they guarantee areas in which quantities of defenseless soft targets are available to a shooter.

VA now allows CC for any school that receieves state funding. I believe it only applies to non-students though...

I wish they would change it for all campuses. I work at one in VA also that just started approving concealed carry for staff. I'm still awaiting approval but its great to know their starting it now.

Typical liberal- I am just so confused... I thought no guns were allowed on campus so how come people keep killing people on campus with guns?

Person with brain- No guns allowed on campus huh, what a great place for criminals to prey on the defenseless.

Now here is an argument!

Most, if not all, college campus buildings are equipped with a fire suppression (sprinkler) system. It is designed and installed with the intent of saving lives in the unlikely event of a fire. Imagine then, a fire in a college dormitory in 2007 where two students were killed because the sprinkler system didn't work. Two hours later, another thirty students died across campus again, because the sprinkler system did not do what it was designed to do. Four years later, another death due to fire. How long would it take for the college administration to realize there was a major fault with the sprinkler system? How many parents would be up in arms to replace the system with something that at least gave students a chance for survival?

Gun free zone = criminal safety zone. The liberals in charge will never learn.

in Michigan, in accordance with the GFSZA, those possessing a CPL can carry openly in GFSZ (concealed while in their vehicle traveling through the GFSZ or remaining in their vehicle while picking up their child), but may not discharge the firearm under any circumstances without facing criminal charges. A fat lot of good that does when it all goes down the toilet!!

I have read reports of various student groups across the Country trying to get "permission" to carry on campus. Typically, though, the groups are rather small and in no way represent the overall desires of the entire student body.

Be it noted, MOST college students have yet to be greatly exposed to the actions of BGs in their lives. (After all, haven't they been "sheltered" for the most part all their lives to this point?)

Unfortunately it takes something like the VA Tech "incident" to open their eyes a bit to the "real world" and the inherent down sides of that world. (.... and some of the vermin inhabiting that world.)

Then, again, there are those who are NEVER exposed, through luck or "position", to the nasty side of life and thus, never really believe that they are just as vunerable as the rest of us.

How does that go? A 2nd ammendment proponent is sometimes nothing more than a mugged "pacifist". LOL!

A LOT of humor is based on observed reality.

Gun free zones equate to Killing fields. Kind of like shooting deer at a salt lick. I try to avoid both as much as possible.

NC just has enacted "Better Gun" laws as of DEC 01. EXCEPT, Winston Salem City Council is now allowed to exempt CC/OC in designated City Parks, some 57 of 61. Nothing like letting the BG's know there is now OPEN SEASON on law abiding unarmed citizens at those parks. What a nice Christmas Present.

The "Better Gun Laws" are pretty much what is generally found in the "Castle Doctrine" perameters. Hooray for NC! (They had to wait until they removed that anti-gun committee chair who "sat on" this bill forever. She and most of the Dem/Libs in NC State Legislature were removed from "power seats" in Nov '10 elections. (Our Lib Gov, ol' BEV, is next to go.)

As is typical with Laws passed at the State level there will be certain local jurisdictions that will either try to sue to put a hold on the enacted legislation (delaying tactics) or will try to enact local ordinances that pervert the intention of the State Law (avoidance tactics).

Wise voters will note this and take steps to prevent it or remove from office instigators of the political tactics.

That is SOP for every public school and university in the nation. Lock the campus down, keep the kids in their classes or dorms, and hope the shooter doesn't turn each room into his own personal kill house.

This is exactly why I am urging my own state legislators to 1) work to get HR 2613, the Citizens Protection Act of 2011, out of the judiciary committee to the floor for a vote, and 2) to support the legislation repealing the Gun Free School Zones Act. Under a strict reading of the law, not only does it prohibit most carry of firearms on school campuses, it also takes away the right of private citizens living within the 1,000 foot exclusion zone to defend their own properties. Under the GFSZA, no firearm is supposed to be carried, possessed, or discharged within 1,000 feet of a school. Now, there are some "exceptions" built in to the law. If you are licensed by your state to carry, then it isn't illegal for you to have it in your vehicle when traveling through the exclusion zone or when dropping off/picking up your kids from school. It is also legal for someone possessing a CPL to openly carry on school property; but it is illegal for you to discharge that firearm while in the exclusion zone, even for your own personal defense. Even off-duty officers are not permitted that right under the GFSZA. Only an active duty officer is permitted to discharge a firearm within the exclusion zone. So not only have they taken away the second amendment rights of students or faculty/staff members who would otherwise be legally entitled to use a firearm in their own defense, the law also takes those rights away from every person who LIVES in the 1,000 foot exclusion zone as well.

Like I have said before, we all need to be working to get HR 2613 out of the Judiciary Committee and urging our legislators to vote for it ASAP. The cost of the Gun Free School Zones Act as already been far too high.

Don't hold your breath waiting for the fed to force colleges and universities to become more gun friendly. These institutions are either private or state-sponsored. The fed & SCOTUS have always supported the rights of property owners (homes, businesses, schools, etc.) to decide if firearms will be permitted on said property. Likewise, the fed & SCOTUS have always supported the state's decision on if/how/where a gun may be carried on public property.

It would be nice but I'm not counting on it.

Trust me, I'm not holding my breath. I am actively advocating for these measures - as should each of us. The current system is a death trap. The numbers make this clear.
