Hi, I plan to get my wife her permit to carry class, background check, and a compact hand gun for Christmas... What do you all suggest for her first gun that is easy to Conceal ?

Entirely too many guys buy a gun they think their wife will like only to discover she won't carry it or even fire it because she doesn't like it. Maybe she doesn't like the recoil or the weight but whatever the reason the money was wasted because she won't carry it. Soooo...take your wife to a gun shop that rents guns to shoot on their range and let her choose which gun(s) in whatever caliber(s) she wants to try out. Then buy her the gun in the caliber she likes. Doesn't matter what the gun/caliber combination is nor does it matter what you might think of the gun/caliber combination she chooses simply because the gun/caliber she likes is the gun/caliber she will carry. And any gun in any caliber that she actually will carry is better than the gun/caliber sitting at home in the safe because she doesn't like it and won't carry it.

Give her a gift certificate to the gun shop/range to cover those items. Put it in a nice card with a personal message from you.

You can offer suggestions, then encourage her to "test drive" various guns before she makes the final choice.

Buy her a nice compact firearm that you like then if she doesn't like it you can get the leftovers ;)

If you want to point her in a certain direction, lcp or g43 :)

Honestly my gf likes the s&w .380 bodyguard. But just play the dumb game and let her look. But it’s better in person. Something she likes can handle the recoil, feels good in her hands, and easy to conceal rather she has the tummy band, holster, or whatever she prefers the best. Even let her look at the .22 revolver, 38 revolver and such. Ladies want everything so let her pick and she might have the same taste you do who knows. She might want the ugliest gun in pink or the most expensive.

Point her in a direction? No, that also is a bad decision. If you want to point her in a direction, point her to a gun store that has female sales staff, and stay the hell out of the way until it comes time to hand over your check or credit card for the gun she chose, unless of course you treat you wife as chattel and she is also good with being treated as a possession.

Calm down, keyboard warrior. Also, if you knew many females then you might know how popular the lcp and g43 are with them. Also, it was a joke along with the undertone of my entire comment. I guess you couldn't interpret that :(

Our local gun shop/range has female staff members and a weekly "Ladies Night" class. Very non-threatening atmosphere for women.

That is a very nice Christmas gift for your wife! It shows you are concerned for her safety. Does she know of your plans or do you want it to be a surprise?

Like others advised, take her to the shooting range between now and Christmas. She can try out several guns and decide on a few favorites. They usually have a Women's shooting class or Shooting 101 class which includes trying out different size and calibers of hand guns. These classes fill up fast so get her signed up.

She will also want to pick out a holster or CC purse. I have an appendix holster for my Walther PPS M2 but I quite often carry it in my purse -- it depends on what I am wearing. Many people have a holster in the back of their belt, but as a woman, I worry that it is too easy for someone to notice it from behind and take it. I carry my S&W .38 Special snub nose hidden in my CC purse. I recommend a "cross-body" purse strap instead of "over-the-forearm" straps (I know, you eyes are starting to glaze over at this point. LOL.) because it is too easy for a purse snatched to grab it from a woman and run -- and there goes her gun with it.

Anyway, good luck and let us know what gun she gets!

My wife said that it's the thought that counts unless I were to buy her a vacuum, an iron, or a one way ticket somewhere.

The Place to Be

Get her a gun she will enjoy shooting weekly so she stays competent. Even a .22lr that she can shoot accurately would be good. Plus shooting weekly will get her confidence up to try a larger caliber and/or smaller gun (more recoil). Get her shooting weekly with a gun she likes will pave the way.

Definitely have her try some different guns before deciding. Gals tend to pick smaller guns before actually having tried any. I just went through this for the last year with my friggin indecisiveness girlfriend. She was insistent she wanted something small but is a pretty shitty shot w the small guns. She does well with full sized guns though. Anyway I had her try many different types, my entire collection - rented - borrowed etc. same ****. She eventually winded up w a CZ Rami which I atleast thought was the better of the smaller guns. Now that she has it though, she doesnt want to shoot it and just keeps asking to shoot my Sig p226 Legion 9mm or my 1911 45. She still wont admit she shouldve gotten a bigger gun though grrrrrr

On a side note, I really liked the little CZ Rami and keep offering to buy it from her if she doesnt like it

Went thru this myself a short while ago. I bought her an NRA course to acheive her CCW permit. Then the fees, waiting etc. Spent some time at my range with her shooting my 22LR and 22Mag handguns. But she was too nervous to try my SW 9 semi. Took her to a great store in CT and was approached by a fantastic guy with his NRA instructor patch on his shirt. He spent about 1 1/2 hours showing and explaining each one that she liked. Then spent some time on the rental range with another NRA instructor and her choice of what she wanted to try. After running thru 2 mags with a Sig P238, (compact 380) she turned to me with a big smile on her face and said "I love this gun". Problem solved. We walked out of the store with her new toy. I had NO INPUT on what she wanted, the choice was completely hers. YMMV, but I'd do it again in a second.

Buying my wife a gun

Hey Laryrossow, welcome to the forum I would suggest a .357 revolver for your wife. Its a great choice due to its versatility. Your wife can shoot a low recoil .38 special for target practice and have fun, but then carry a better .357 defense load if it is going to be carried for defense. My wife has a .38 snubbie Taurus that was given to her years ago that is a well built gun. Take her out to see how the different guns feel to her and see what she likes. That's the most important thing.

Yep, she has to like it or she wont carrry it!

Ill get the name of the that place in CT VTPatriot when my girlfriend is ready to get one. Hehe

If you have a Women on Target or Well Armed Women chapter nearby, I highly recommend that your wife connect with the groups and listen to their wisdom. My wife settled on a Sig P938, after I stupidly listened to the salesman and bought her a 38 SPL revolver because “it was the best gun for a woman. Stupid me. Lousy salesman. Outdated advice.

Men that seem to "know" what gun their wife should carry amaze me. Do they even know the person they are married to? I'm sure they 'talk' to their wives, but do they listen?

I took my wife to a LGS that women sales people and a range. She was able to look at the different types and calibers, then rented a few and shot them before deciding.

I'm also smart enough to know that if you buy her a gun she doesn't like, she won't become proficient with it, and likely won't carry it.
