Any good books or reference sources for a guide to building an AR-15?

Try ar15.com it is a pretty good resource

Just find a good schematic and google the parts, stick to well known brands.
There are not that many parts.
It will be more expensive.
You could get a really good AR and add a few mods to it.
I would start with a windham.
