Broke My First Gun Today

Bad day in the firearms world. My Walther P22 only has around 1000 rounds through it and now it's out of commission.

So I shot my gun this morning with no trouble, and then I go home to clean it. I sit down on my carpet floor and lay out a little rag to clean my gun on. I disassemble and then put a little solvent onto a .22 cal Hoppes bronze brush as always and attach it to a rod and then send it through the barrel starting at the chamber. Halfway through, the brush gets harder to push but I didnt think much of it. I push harder and the brush goes through and out the muzzle and the brush hits my floor and bends. (I was only holding the gun a few inches above the floor and the brush popped out of the muzzle and then bent upon hitting the floor).

Everything seemed fine minus having to push my brush through harder, so I figured there was just a lot of carbon built up in the barrel. I took my other .22 cal nylon brush and sent it through just fine and out comes a little chunk of stainless steel or chrome. That's bad I thought, so I send a few patches through to clean it out and I take a look down the barrel by holding it up to a light and sure enough there is a spot in the middle of the barrel that seems to be missing rifling...

I was shooting cheap Remington Thunderbird lead ammo for the first time through that gun. So Im guessing lead built up and my brush caught on it and took the chunk of rifling out with the lead? Or is it a cheap barrel?

Any other ideas?

Wow that sucks. I have a sig mosquito 22lr. I've been told to stick with anything over 34 grain or use cci mini mags. Would that be covered under warranty, or will you have to buy a new barrell?

Not sure where to even buy a new barrel but Ill be calling Walther tomorrow to ask

I'm going with defect in the barrel. Is the p22 a fixed barrel like the Mosquito? I have a mosquito and Only shoot mini mags out of it because it's picky with anything else. I heard the P22's were similar.

sounds like a defective barrel, but that doesnt eliminate defective ammo, i recommend going through the warranty process to get the gun fixed, then switching to cci, federal, or winchester ammo. ive had very bad experiences with remington rimfire, such as over pressure, little to no primer, etc, [the over pressure was scary as hell, picked out a couple of slivers of brass from my hand]

I've shot thousands of rounds through my P22's without a problem. I don't use cleaning rods because of the opportunity to score or gouge a barrel - especially in .22 where the cleaning rod is just shy of the bore diameter. See about warranty work and move to a bore snake.

I had lead build up from that Remington Thunderbird ammo the last time I went to the range with my SR22. I'll never use it again. Ran Champion copper plated through it today and no build up whatsoever.

I think you are referring to Remington Thunderbolt ammo. If so, it is the very worst .22 ammo I have ever used. Out of a box of 50, at least 10 won't even fire due to bad priming.

I can't believe that the ammo was the fault. I've shot every kind of crap through tons of guns and never had the inside of a barrel get damaged. I would contact the gun warrenty dept right away and would not settle for less than a new barrel. I have also been bretty agressive in gun cleaning and never damaged a gun with a brass brush and aluminum rod.
My wiffe shoots a walthers P22 andI hate to hear of this damage

Even if the barrel did get "leaded-up", or if there was some carbon in the barrel, the small amount of force that a brush would exert should not dislodge a part of the barrel. Based on the info you have provided, it sounds to me like the barrel was defective.

thunderbolt i believe is what i had problems with in a 10/22, and there was no obstruction. the other worst rimfire ammo that i ran into was remington golden bullet value pack, every 1 in 17 was a dud.
