This is a common mistake when shooting over a cover. You have to clear the cover with the bore axis and not just with the line of sight, otherwise you will shoot the cover. The height of the sight above the bore for an AR is 2.6".
There is a similar mistake when using a laser as a sighting system that is mounted below the bore axis. This is common for handguns. I already pointed out in an earlier thread that if you use a laser as a sighting system to shoot underneath a cover, such as a desk, you have to clear the cover with the bore axis and not just with the laser. A laser dot visible on the target doesn't mean you have cleared the bore axis.
