I recently acquired a Bond Arms USA Defender Derringer. I am just curious what is the train of thought is on what the best ammo would be for this firearm for both practice as well as self defense.

I have one also. I have shot the full range of ammo in it.
Any 410 shot is good for shooting cans. Cheap stuff works fine.
For defense, I would use slugs, or the Winchester PDX.
For anything over 7 yds or so, try the 45lc.
It is a cool gun to have, & shoot. But i would not recommend it as a primary weapon.
Single action & only 2 shots wouldn't work for me. As a BUG I do carry mine with a crossdraw holster
when driving.
Have fun with it. It is what it is.
I'm still impressed with the machining on these guns.

You must be careful with your state laws and choice of ammo selection. For example, here in OK any firearm that fires shotgun type ammo (410 or larger with more then 1 projectile) is classified as a shotgun. As such, a shot gun may not be carried concealed. For home use it is fine just can't carry concealed. You can carry the weapon concealed provided the ammo is a single projectile such as the Colt 45 ACP long. I would imagine if the 410 was a single slug it too would work.

It is defined as a pistol by Federal Law. You can't change that because if OK classified it as a shotgun and the Feds agreed, it would be an NFA Title II firearm. It is far closer to a rifle than a shotgun anyways. Shotguns are defined as smooth bore while rifles have, ta da, rifling.

Right, good luck finding any of the Hornady. I've looked for quite awhile now, sold out everywhere.
Not everywhere. I have 9 boxes of the Leverevolution .45Colt 225gr FTX ammo sitting in front of me. But only 2 boxes left of the Win PDX1 .410s.

I have found some available on line. But with shipping, too much for me.
I have one box of Hornady 45's, shot one time just to see how they kicked.
The rest I'll keep for now. I have way too many wadcutters for practice.
Have yet to see any of the Hornady 410's.

What's the barrel length? If you have the 4" you could shoot .410 3" 00 Buck, which I believe contains five pellets and at 7-10' patterns pretty well.
