Bodyguard 380 magazine question?

Just bought a new bodyguard 380 and can't figure something out. If I try and insert a magazine, it will not go in unless I press the magazine release button. Is this normal?

I thought my LCP was that way too and I always pressed the release when I inserted it. I just tried it again though and it WILL go in without pressing it, but it's a LOT harder.

I have never had that issue with any of my guns (both past and present).

I've had mine for 2 yrs and I've found with a full magazine you have to give it a good push or slap. The mag spring is tight but helps feed any junk you throw through it.

I've done all but drop kick mine and it will only go in if you push the button.

My Bodyguard 380 is the same way and I have been meaning to research and find out if that is intended or a defect so glad to see I'm not alone.

It's called a "magazine RELEASE", not a "button to help you load your mag into your gun" button.

Just sayin.... Ya know?

I found lots of complaints about this with the general consensus being that the magazine release is slightly oversize at the point that it hooks into the magazine and gets caught up on the front right lip of the top of the magazine. Some have filed it down a bit and others have contacted S&W customer service to arrange to send their Bodyguard back to be repaired.
You can see the issue with an unloaded gun and magazine by locking the slide open and sliding in the mag while looking down into the mag well. The release clearly sticks out too far and catches the lip of the mag.

I had a Bodyguard and, initially, it was the same - factory mag and aftermarket mag. After a few turns at the range and some load and unload with snap caps the factory mag would go in no problem but the aftermarket needed a little push.

I just spent 5 minutes filing the catch down a tiny amount at a time (and then testing) with a fine grit file and mine is now functioning properly.

I've had similar probs with both a BG380 and an LCP. I took the mags apart cleaned them and flipped the springs around. The follower seemed to sit better after I did this and I haven't have any further problems since.

I had a bodyguard 380 but sold it back to the store. 90% of the time I could not insert a full magazine into the weapon, but had no trouble if I removed one round. Also could not move the take down lever more than 45 degrees clockwise, so could not clean it. Sent it in for repair, they returned it saying nothing was wrong. Lost all confidence in the weapon and sold it.

Was a pretty happy/loyal S&W customer up until then

I had the same issue, i kept working it and finally one day at the range i was shooting defensively dropped the mag out put the spare one in by using the but if my hand. It clicked, not sure if it broke off a piece off inside however after that I've had no more problems with it. When I bought it i almost took it back I thought it was defective. Such a sweet pocket gun glad it's fixed. Try slamming the magazine in and out bet it would fix your problem.
